Norton Utilities is stuck on cleaning registry deep cleaning

I have done exactly as your instructions downloaded removel tool removed norton, removed other norton from add/remove, reran removel to make sure all was removed. I updated NU. ran NU and it does run the deep clean but when I click on manage your startup and it still shuts it self down. What next please???

by the way I have a new message that says system health is LOW

Hi Kari,

The system health Low from NU has to do with errors in the registry. Registry errors like this are usually not significant. If your registry scans are running good now you could choose to have them corrected.

However you may wish to hold off until we get this new problem corrected. I recall back in January when we worked on the original deep scan freezing issue and then a couple of months elapsed until you encountered this problem again, this crash problem when clicking Manage Startup was never reported until very recently.

Can you think of anything which might have happened around this time? Or did you perhaps just start using the Manage Startup option recently?

I have requested direct Symantec involvement on this thread to continue troubleshooting this issue.

Thanks

Allen

I really do not know for sure now if I was using Manage Startup option. I have not done anything different. Yes I agree that it was shortly after you fixed this last time that it started up again. Getting very frustrating for me because I would really like to use this and know it is running correctly.

Thank you

Kari Nichols

MY update as of Monday 5/10/2010 I clicked on NU and went through to clean my computer and now when I click on "Manage your  Startup option" it shuts down now with no warning popup window... but when I click on monitor your system it runs, when I click on "monitor your registry" it closes, then when I click on "performance test" it too runs... What is going on and what is next???

HI Kari,

I could have sworn I asked about this before but I've looked through the thread and cannot find it so I'm left with no other conclusion but that somehow I did not recommend this.

We need to check your system drive for hard drive errors, such as bad sectors, etc.

Have you run a chkdsk on your C drive since all this started? Please run a chkdsk /r on your C drive and also any other hard drive in your system. For your system drive, Windows will inform you that it cannot be done and ask if you want to schedule the check for the next restart. Answer yes to this and then reboot your computer. Shortly after windows starts loading the chkdsk will start running and report and attempt to correct any problems it finds.

I would suggest that you back up your computer as a precaution before running this.

Thanks very much

Allen

When you say "It shuts down now" do you mean NU or do you mean the computer?  Running a check disk as Allen suggests is definitely a good next step to check.  Depending on your answer to my first question and the result of the check disk scan will determine our next steps from here.

I have put in to run chkdsk and the window pops up but closes just as fast. So I tried this chkdsk /r the same thing happened. Black pop up window opens and closes just as fast.

Erik, to your question, when I run NU and click on Manage startup just the NU shuts down, sorry I was not clear with that.

What next guys???

Thank you for your help...

Kari

Hi Kari,

Are you typing chkdsk /r in the start menu run box?

You need to type cmd in the start menu run box for XP. This will bring up a command shell window and in that window you would type chkdsk /r.

Thanks much

Allen

Thank you but tell me what I am going to do because I am not sure I know what you are trying to do and I really do not want to mess up my system. I am a Vista user...

Thank you

Kari Nichols

Clcik on Start.  There's a search box in the Start menu.  Type in cmd.  You'll see cmd.exe listed in the resutls.  Right click and choose "Run as administrator."  Once that launches, then run the chkdsk /r command.  You'll see a messsage about wanting to run at startup.  Press Y for yes.  Then reboot the machine.

Hi Kari,

chkdsk /r checks your hard drive for things like bad sectors, corrupt file system entries and several other things. The /r switch tells it to fix (if possible) any errors it finds.

If your hard drive has errors of any kind we need to know about it and you would certainly want to have them fixed. If your hard drive has no errors then no changes will be made to your drive and we'll know that too and can move on.

As I metioned before it is never a bad idea to do a fresh backup with an image backup program like Ghost or other product just as a safety net.

I mentioned typing cmd in the start menu run box, for Vista you would type this in the Search box.

Hope this helps.

Allen

OK I did what you wanted me to do, "chkdsk /r checks your hard drive for things like bad sectors" and then I went back in and ran a deep clean and it still works great. The system finished and restarted,,  But when I click on manage your startup it still closes down without that pop up window and still has that my system health is low. What next guys?

We're going to need the crash dump.

Got Start > Control Panel > Problem Reports and Solutions.  From there click on "View Problem History" and look for Norton Utilities.  Select "Copy to Clipboard" and paste it in a response.

There is no history for NU so I will again run cmd and put in chkdsk /r command and have it run next time I close down my system. I must have cleared the records but do not remember doing this.

Running chkdsk wouldn't put an NU record there.  Try opening NU and then checking there.

So where do you want me to check with errors?

From Start > Control Panel > Problem Reports and Solutions.  From there click on "View Problem History" and look for Norton Utilities.  Select "Copy to Clipboard" and paste it in a response.

From this

From Start > Control Panel > Problem Reports and Solutions.  From there click on "View Problem History" and look for Norton Utilities.  Select "Copy to Clipboard" and paste it in a response.

There is nothing about NU.

Now what do I do?

What do you see there? Does it list any problems?
