A short while ago I bought Norton Internet Security which included Utilities but Utilities run regular scans in a window and keeps stealing the focus to ask me to tell it to proceed fixing xyz problems. The problem is if I am doing anything else is puts this in front and generally gets in the way. It's like reading something and someone keeps shoving 'interesting' newspaper articles in your face. In short, disruptive.
How do I prevent it from doing this and preferably doing more background scans or at least letting me sort it out in my own time?
Especially as I am not knowledgeable about computer hardware, I want to avoid risky fixes involving the registry if it can be helped.

NIS has a couple of options to turn off notifications.
Open the program -> settings -> network -> notifications [set to off]
general -> Norton task notifications [set to off]
