Norton Utilities Premium 17 just updated to version 17.0.3.658 a day or two ago and now the File Shredder feature no longer functions. The file shredder desktop icon is a generic blank icon and nothing happens when I double click on it. I tried to uninstall the file shredder function and reinstall it from within the program but still no luck. I managed to get the full 17.0.3 installer and completely reinstalled NU Premium but again the File Shredder feature no longer works.
I can confirm the File Shredder works correctly now on all of my machines it is installed on. The first sign it works is that the icon appears correctly now once installed. For anyone using it, if you installed it and it's working correctly you'll also see the File Shredder folder item in Windows Explorer, typically at the bottom.
Thank you for the fix Norton, it works perfectly. In the future, unless you are giving out free software (this is not), I'd like to see prominently displayed announcements on the front of your support site for unusable features that you already know are broken. You cost me a bunch of time trying to resolve this and search for answers online. This was not necessary and a simply announcement would've saved me much time. That would be a decent service to your paying and/or faithful customers.
File Shredder was still "broken" after NUP updated through "Check for updates", but removed and reinstalled and now File Shredder is back.
Didn't see the long uninstall process that some have seen so happy days.
That happened to me as well uninstalling the older 17.0.3. I just ended up closing the window and clicked on the shortcut for NUP in the start menu. When asked if I wanted the shortcut removed, i said yes and just simply restarted Windows and then reinstalled using the 17.0.5 installer. This situation only happened to one of my systems, on the other systems it uninstalled just fine.
I tried to uninstall Norton Utilities Premium first as someone else suggested and I found myself in a worse situation. The uninstall program has been running to 20 minutes now with no end in site. After 40 some minutes it terminated normally. I am curious to know why the uninstall would take this much time, any explanation?
I reinstalled the NUP, the File Shredder appears to be working, doing what I don't know.
I have installed Norton Utilities Premium 17.0.5 & have verified that the File Shredder does work once again, interestingly it also seemed to fix an issue that is seen on my laptop in which the bug made the power plan in Windows automatically go back to Balanced only when Norton Utilities Premium is opened. One observation about the update though, if I update to 17.0.5 through the updater and even after restarting Windows, the File Shredder is still broken so that means I would have to uninstall and reinstall using the full 17.0.5 installer and afterwards everything is working as it should but otherwise everything is normal again. Thank you!
Hi,
We have fixed this issue in Norton Utilities Premium 17.0.5. Could you please verify if the fix works? Thanks.

Norton will never give an ETA for fixing issues. That way there is no pressure to release a flawed fix because of a promised date. They take the time that is necessary to do it right.
How long does is it going to take to resolve this? it has been a couple of months already?
The problem is that we have been paying to regularly deficient products (file schredder, secure vpn, ...) for the last few years
Hmmm
However, this was promised since June 20th.
No one promised anything.
Norton, and most other developers never promise any date for a fix. This is because it takes time to identify the problem, find the affected code, determine the fix, create the fix, then test the fix before releasing the fix. At any point in this process there can be other bugs created by the fix that starts the whole process again.
Better to take the necessary time to get it right than to cause more problems with a defective fix.
Same here. However, this was promised since June 20th. That's a month ago and there is neither an update from Norton about when this will be expected back up or even if it will be back up. Unacceptable Norton, and unprofessional. Paid product, fix it. And if you are working on it then provide some communication please.

I have had exactly the same problem as Pcloverxp with the File Shredder (NUP version 17.0.3.658) since I uninstalled and reinstalled NUP about a month ago. My File Shredder is completely inoperative. The File Shredder desktop icon is empty and inactive.
There were already unresolved compatibility issues between version 16.0 of NUP and the 64-bit version of Windows (see: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v89018101) .
So wait for a resolution by Norton and not expect a quick solution
This issue is not like the issue with NU16. NU16 is an unofficially discontinued product that Norton is not going to fix. NU Premium (17) is the current NU line and is being supported. Hopefully it will not be long for a fix.
Hi,
We are aware of this issue, and we are working on it. I will post an update once I have more information. Thank you.

Thank you! I thought that it was just happening on one of my computers but I did a check on the others and sure enough it was doing the same thing on those systems as well...and here I thought it was just me. hahaha!
I just checked and can verify your findings.
I'll escalate this thread.
