Norton Utilities Premium will not update #2

I previously posted about not being able to update or uninstall NUP. That thread has been, somehow, disabled. The respondent said:

"... use the removal tool. It should remove ALL Norton products at the same time with the exception of Norton Family and Norton Secure VPN stand alone version. Make sure you install NUP AND your Norton product into your BOOT DRIVE vice the D: drive when you reinstall. Let us know how this goes for you."

I ran the removal tool but it said it was going to remove Norton 360 nd didn't mention NUP: I cancelled it.

What should I do?

Not necessarily bad information. You never followed up, so there was no opportunity to dig deeper to help.

Yes, software that is not crucial in any way I install on D: to give C: a bit more space.

I used to do that. But found the space saved was not that much anyway. I no longer separate the installed programs. Plus it makes it easier for backing up the OS with my disc imaging software.

Go ahead and let NUP complete the uninstall if it still will not update correctly. There was a recent update available. Maybe that one will install correctly.

Ah right, thanks. I was given a bad direction in the other thread then.

Yes, software that is not crucial in any way I install on D: to give C: a bit more space.

White list?

So, can I uninstall it at all or do I have to reset the whole PC?

From this Norton Support article,

Norton Remove and Reinstall tool is used to uninstall and reinstall or remove your Norton device security product on Windows

So this tool will not remove NUP. It is only used to reinstall Norton 360. An older Norton Removal tool might have removed the older NU 16 product.

Looking at your second image from the previous thread, it gives an idea of what it is looking for. It appears to be looking at some White List that some feature of NUP may be creating on each drive.

My Win 10 installation does not have a Program Files folder on my D drive. Have you changed the drive that you install some of your software to go to the D drive?

Wow! Twelve months! I've been ignoring the problem.

Well spotted. All I saw was "delete warning". It's a bit suspicious though, that it says "delete warning" then says it's preserving that one - random! Is it going to do that with all the files on the drive? Why is NUP looking a the D: drive at all - it's on C:? What if it fancies deleting a few? It didn't do that on another PC I have.

What a rigmarole. Why can't it just uninstall like normal software?

So my question was: what should I do about the removal tool, will it remove NUP?

The last reply there was over a year ago. What have you been doing for this past year about this issue?

The messages in your image show that those files were being preserved. So what are you concerned about. Let the update run. If you are still concerned, try getting a disc image using a program like the free version of Macrium Reflect to get a full disc image as protection in case something goes wrong with any software install/update.
