Norton Utilities prevents Norton Removal Tool to run

I have a MAJOR problem. My PC idles 20 - 25 minutes during the whole boot ptocess until programs can be runeffectively. So far I have not found the problem. NIS does not find anything although removing it made certain aspects of the process run much faster.

In any case, based on info from other threads, I wanted to run the Norton Removal Tool before re-installing NIS. The Removal Tool refuses to run, claiming that Norton Utilities 14 is still installed which is absolutely not true.

I un-installed it, rebooted and the Removal Tool still claims NU is there. There are no Symantec/Norton folders left so I must assume that the problem is buried in the registry which obviously was not cleaned by the regular un-install process.

So, here I am, stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Hopefully someone can help me to get to the first step: being able to use the removal tool.

That still does not explain why my PC sits around for 20 minutes doing nothing obvious (system idle process betw. 80 - 99%) but first things first.
