Norton Utilities - System Health Is Low still Happening

I recently installed NU as part of the package I received with NIS. I am getting the System Health Is Low message on the main screen. I see that this was complained about in May shortly after IE8 came out and that IE8 was appraently the problem. It is now the end of November and I am getting this message and none of the solutions I have tried from the Tech support site have cured this problem. I would have thought this would have been corrected by now. ANy thoughts? I am running NU 14.5.0.116 on a Windows 7 Professional system.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi Gator5000e,

Welcome to the forum. Which version of Windows 7 do you have (home, business, etc) and 32 or 64 bit?

Is there any other message on the screen besides just system health is low? What kind of scans have you run from NU recently?

When you scan registry, just right click the problem and select Ignore. Right click again and select ignore all.

That will ignore all the problems, therefore having a good System Health :D

Hi HPTouchsmart,

We need to determine what the problem is first. It is not advisable to just click Ignore All because this would defeat the purpose of having a utility which scans the registry to alert you to potential problems. This is a valuable utility and errors (except for isolated cases) should not just be ignored, but rather corrected.

Ok, but i think the problem is that Norton possibly does not have sufficient rights. I have had this problem before, and i toned down UAC to allow it.

Hi HPTouchsmart,

Understood but all those things can be dealt with and resolved which will then allow NU to do it's job as was intended. By keeping the registry clean (w/o errors) the system will boot faster, be more stable, etc. One habit I've gotten into is to do a full scan at least once a week and when I uninstall a software program I run a manual scan and the reason for the latter is that all software programs leave things behind which can clutter the registry and can result in lower performance.

Thanks for the reply. I am running W7 Professional 64-bit. I tried the steps outlined int he tech support article by trying to run the registry cleaner in Safe Mode and by ignoring the repeated entries. Funny thing is that they are ignored by NU even before I am telling the program to ignore them. And the same files keep popping up.

Hi Gator5000e,

Which article are you referring to? Perhaps this one?

A couple more questions:

1) Are you logged on as Administrator or another account with administrator rights?

2) How many entries are showing up in the scan with errors?

3) When you select to do the repair, how many are successful and how many ignored?

4) In the main NU window, please select Administer and then click Settings. Is the box checked to create system restore point? It is a good idea to have this checked so that in the unlikely event of problems after doing a repair you have a means to restore your system to the pre-repair state.

5) How do you currently have UAC configured? Please see this link and for now just check the current settings without making changes to them.

Thanks

Allen

Hi Gator5000e,

There is something else which you can collect for me which should allow me to see what the problem is.

In addition to the questions I asked in my last post please do this:

From the Main Norton Utilities window, please select Optimize on the left pane. Then click on Clean your Registry on the right hand pane. After the Scan Results comes up, just click Close on the bottom right. From the main screen please click on Administer on the left pane. Then click on Settings on the right pane.

On the Settings page, please click on Open Log Folder. This will open up a Windows Explorer window. In that window will be a file called Scan.log. Please right click on that file and select Copy. Then on your windows desktop right click and select Paste. This will put a copy of the file on your desktop.

Please attach the Scan.log file to your post by clicking the Add Attachments link at the bottom (below the orange post button). You can then browse to the file saved on your desktop and attach to your post.

This log file will show me what errors are being found by the Registry Scan.

Thanks much

Allen

Thank, but there is no file in that folder or on my computer (after running a search) called scan.log. I only show these file. I have show hidden filoes enabled.

AppRegCompact

So I am not sure what to do. When I run the Registry Scanner that is part of CCleaner, it reports no errors. So it must be inherent in the program.

Hi Gator5000e,

Did you first run the Registry Cleaner as mentioned in my previous post? The file I requested won't be there until you have run a complete scan with Norton Utilities (not CC Cleaner).

Understand that each registry cleaner out there is different, what some cleaning utilities find, others may not. So we need to understand what NU is finding so we can get it corrected.

If after doing the full scan I outlined earlier you still don't see the scan.log file please let me know.

Thanks much

Allen

Sorry, forgot to do that. Here is the log file.

Hi Gator5000e,

Thanks for the update. This shows only two errors. Please run the scan once more, only this time choose Repair instead of close after you get the scan results. There will be a final screen of confirmation after the repair, please tell me the number of Total Items Repaired,Total Items Ignored and Total Items Found.

After this please hit Continue which will bring you back to the main screen. Does it now show System Healthy? Just to make sure, run one more Clean your Registry scan, it should now come back with no errors found.

Thanks

Allen

Thanks. I have been selecting repair each time and this one remaining file is the one that keeps coming up. The results screen says :

Repair Complete

Total Items Found:       1

Total Items Ignored:     1

Total Items Repaired:   0

The file shown in the scan log is the same one that keeps coming up each time and keeps getting ignored.

Hi Gator5000e,

Got it, thanks for the update. This will be easy to resolve. Do your scan again and when the final scan results page comes up, please right click on the entry which is listed. Then from the list, please select Add subkey to Ignore list. Then click on Repair. It should again come back with 1 error ignored. Do another scan and it should no longer be reported.

It is possible that we might have to go in and right click the entry and select Add Value to Ignore list as well to get this entry to be totally ignored going forward.

FYI: There are some cases where NU is not able to resolve a recurring error like this and the report indicates that it has ignored the error. However, until this error is added explicitly to the Ignore list it will keep coming back.

Please let me know if this works.

Thanks

Allen

Whew, thank you, Allen. That fixed (or hid) the problem. I appreciate your assistance. BTW, what does NU offer that the free (And I already bought NU) CCleaner registry scanner doesn’t do?

Hi Gator5000e,

Thanks for the update. I have not tried CC cleaner myself but I believe NU is better. One thing I can mention just based on going to the CC Cleaner web site is that NU has a registry defragger which I don't believe CC cleaner has. Similar to defragmenting a HD, this defragments your registry which can have a noticeable improvement in system performance. If you look through the list of features I think you will be able to readily see other differences as well.

Please mark the relevant post which you believe contained the solution by clicking on the green Solution button that only you can see. This will allow others to know the problem is solved and quickly get to the solution when they search the forums.

Take Care and Happy Thanksgiving.
