Hi all, has anyone experienced substantially reduced download speeds when using Norton VPN? I just went back to Spectrum, did the speed test and I'm getting well over 400 Mbps. As soon as I enable the VPN the number drops to about 130 Mbps. It was worse than that one day, only about 89 Mbps.
It also does not start on its own when I boot up, I have to manually enable it. This has been an issue since it was in Beta and has never been fixed.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton, still same issue with speed. Thank you for all of your suggestions. I just think Norton has to go back to the drawing board on the VPN. It's just not working when right it's part of Norton 365.
Yes, I agree that something is wrong with my installation. It's been a huge hassle since I accepted the offer to add the VPN (beta). I may have enabled Windows firewall which disabled Norton's firewall. I will do as you suggested to see if I can get this all resolved. Thanks again!
??? Have you disabled the Norton firewall for some reason?
If not, there sounds like something wrong with your Norton installation. I would suggest downloading and running the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool from www.norton.com/nrnr Be sure you run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.
It wasn't enabled. Windows Firewall was. I enabled it, ran the test again, with VPN enabled still extremely slow. Same results. I guess this isn't going to get fixed. The VPN is definitely on their back burner for Norton.
My bet is the VPN. Try the same speed tests with and without the VPN feature enabled.
If you really want to test the firewall, you can right click on the Norton icon in your system tray, and click on Disable Smart Firewall. Then run the tests again.
I tried several countries and all are reading under 100 Mbps. Doesn't seem right. Could the firewall be slowing it down, maybe it needs to allow something through when the VPN is enabled?
I don't know, very frustrating. I have been a long time Norton user and fan but this is driving me nuts.
The reply time is just luck of the draw. I am in and out of the forums many times a day.
If you are using the new Norton 360 product, after you Turn On the VPN, you will then see an Open button beside the VPN feature. Click that and a smaller window will open for the VPN. Click on the Virtual Location tab at the top of that window. If it is showing your actual country, choose a different country and test your connection again.
Thanks peterweb! How do I change the virtual location? A difference from over 400 to under 100 is crazy. I'm on a brand new computer, SSD, 8GB RAM, Windows 10 Pro. I can't think of any reason the computer is the issue so it has to be the VPN.
And I really appreciate the quick reply. You're awesome!
There is always going to be some reduction of speed as all data is encrypted and decrypted as it leaves and returns to your computer. Many users have reported in the past that they are seeing significant speed reductions with the VPN active. At the same time, many do not see that much of a reduction. You can try changing the virtual location to see if that makes any difference.
If you are using the VPN feature in the new Norton 360 products, there currently is no way to have it start automatically. Norton has said they are considering more control in a future version.
