With regard to Norton Wi-Fi Privacy, if I have to use a public network, but the only access is an ethernet cable instead of wireless, would I still be protected? I am wondering about this in case I should ever run into it while staying at a hotel. I would be using a windows 10 laptop.
Ok, after some digging, i have found that some ISP's can throttle your speeds when your using a VPN if their servers are congested, giving priority to Businesses ect, and they can do so legally. Depending upon which Protocol is used, your ISP can easily see your encrypted traffic to single it out and throttle it. Most VPN providers suggest using UDP 443 which is easy for your ISP to see and single out the traffic. If TCP 443 were to be used, is it has so much traffic it makes it harder for the ISP to single out your tunnel to throttle it.
As mentioned above in my other post, it also depends greatly on how close the server is which you connect too, if it is clear across the country from your location, you will see a speed hit.
I can confirm these speed hits. I just tested mine on Speedtest by Ookla, and with NWP "disabled" I was hitting 132.16 MBPS, with NWP enabled it dropped down to 36.18 MBPS, so calculating mine as compared to @Bubba Reeves, I would say his is accurate, and very unacceptable for those on slower connections.
I should add, this is normal behavior for a VPN to slow speeds down, but this really is quite the rather large hit of speed. Some optimizations look to be in order.
Thanks for the info. I have added your posts to the information I have passed on to Norton.
Set to fully automatic and download test was 1.8 MBPS.
I use speedtest.net . Without NWP 80+, With NWP 2.5-
I set it to us and let it automatically set an IP address. I will try fully automatic and let you know…
How are you testing your connection speeds? What is the final result with NWP active?
Do you have NWP set to Auto Select the country, or have you manually set a country? If manually set, can you try the Auto Select?
I have asked about this speed reduction and will add your post to the list.
I have a wired internet connection that typically runs at 80+ MBPS. When I run Norton Wi-Fi Privacy my speed slows down by 97,5% If this is normal, then I cannot use this program anymore. Anyone have any ideas?
Your welcome, glad I could help! :)
Thanks. That was very helpful.
Yes, it will work. I have Norton Wi-Fi on my desktop that does not have a Wi-Fi adaptor only Ethernet. Once connected you can check by opening your browser to "whatsmyipaddress.com" and cross reference the info with the information in Norton Wi-Fi.
