Norton won't open - "unpecified error"

I tried to run a quick scan tonight but suddenly Norton Security Suite won't open.  Instead I get an error message:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security\Engine64/21.1.6.18\uistub.exe  Unspecified Error"

How can I fix this?  THANKS!

Are you trying to open Norton by double clicking on a shortcut icon on your desktop? If you are you may need to change the version number to the most recent version by right clicking on the shortcut and selecting properties.

Hi, spauld. It sounds like you're running NIS, the current version of which is V 21.1.0.18.

You can check that by going to Support/About in the Norton UI.

Run Live Updates until no more are found, and see if you can right click on your Norton Icon in the System Tray area, and run a Quick Scan from there

If that doesn't work, you can go to the Programs Menu, click on Norton Internet Security there, and run a scan from there also.

Have you tried rebooting since this problem arose ?

Thanks. for the fast reply.  I've rebooted a couple of times with the same results.  The only thing I seem to be able to do with Norton is open the properties box, but there doesn't seem to be much I can change there (as far as I know...which isn't much!).  Anytime I try to open anything else related to Norton (from anywhere on my machine) I get the same error message. I tried running a scan from the Norton icon in my task bar, still the same error message.  I then tried to get into Norton from my program files.  If I try to open anything in the Norton Security Suite in my program files, NOTHING happens at all.  ...it's as if I did not click on it at all. I'm stumped.

Hi spauld,

First of all please verify if yu are in fact runninf Norton Security Suite from Comcast or perhaps a retial product of a different name.

Then from the main page of your product select Support and then About and tell us the version you are running.

Please tell us your operating system and default browser.

Look in the Control Panel, Programs & Features ( Add/Remove Programs if on XP), and see if there is a Norton Security Suite listed as an installed program.

Please post back with answers to all the above questions.

So sorry, I am running Windows 7 with a  64 bit system and I am (was?) using the Norton product through Comcast.  My default browser is Internet Explorer.

In trying to identify the exact Norton product, I can't get anything related to Norton to open, in any way.  I can right click on the icon on my desktop to see the properties box, but none of the product details (i.e. which version it is) is shown there.  I looked in my programs  and I do see the Norton product listed.  I visited the Control Panel -  'uninstall or change programs" and do  see the Norton security suite listed. I appreciate the help. It sounds like I need to somehow identify the version I am running in order to fix this problem.

Thanks spauld,

You are correct once we have the version, we'll be able to assist you better, as it looks like a "clean" install is in order.

Let's try to get the version number first:

Open Control Panel > Programs & Features and on the Uninstall or change a program  screen, locate the Norton Securtiy Suite entry.  On the far right hand side of that line is the Version column - what does it say?
