Norton360 V2 selected files not backed up but Norton says they are

After a useless interaction with the e-mail helpdesk I realised that I have a better chance here. I went to other backup related messages on this forum but it appears mine is different (apologies if it is not).

I have windows XP fully updated and recently upgraded to Norton360 V2, before this I did not use the backup feature so I do not know whether the problem is new. I'm backing up to the online storage.

After I selected the files that I wanted to backup I ended up with about 4,000 files. After the first backup I noticed that about 2,000 files did not end up in the online storage. Turned out that almost all my emails were not backed up. I'm using Livemail and double checked that the files in that folder has been ticked. I have tried numerous times making sure that Livemail was not running during the backup. Interestingly, emails in some subfolders of the livemail folders are being backed up. So why not the others......

Using the backup status indicators Norton actually thinks that all emails are backed up as per my selection as they all have a green tick. When I put a new email in the folder and run a backup the file will not be backed up but the indicator will be green. New emails in the few folders that do 'work' are being backed up.

So, somehow Norton thinks files are being backed up eventhough they are not. This behaviour is consistent for most of the subfolders in the Livemail folder. Other folders seem ok, but I have not reconciled the total number of missing files.

One of the things I would like to be able to do is to reset the status of the backup indicators to 'force' Norton to backup the files (not much hope it will actually work as new files get the same treatment, but willing to try). Also, is there a quick way to delete all files in the online storage (forcing reset from that way). It appears you can only 'select all' on subfolder level.

Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that somebody tells me that I just have to change one setting......

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

John

Adam,

Thanks for the quick response, much appreciated. Answers to your questions;

1.) Where are livemail files stored on the machine?

C:\Documents and Settings\John\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail

Livemail creates subfolders in this folder similar to the folder structure in livemail itself.

2.) Did you have to manually add them to your backup set?  If so, did you add a folder, or add files individually?

Initially Norton added them automatically to the backup set. Subsequently I have added and deleted the folders as part of my 'testing'. Which is part of the reason i would like to be able to reset to original settings. When I do select the message folders manually, Norton recognises the content as email files.

3.) Have you excluded anything manually from you backup set (like right clicking and excluding a folder)

I am not sure whether I excluded something prior to the first back up. Subsequently I have excluded files manually. I have done that both within Norton and whithin explorer (right clicking).

4.) what is the file extension for livemail files?

eml

5.) To the best of your knowledge are all of the missing files email files from LiveMail or are others missing as well?

I believe it is only from LiveMail. I randomly checked and those were ok but I have not checked all 2,000 files that are in the storage.

John

John,

I had sent you a private message but i'm not sure you got it.  I have a couple more questions:

- Are all of the files that appear to be missing .eml files?

- I'm assuming that you're checking the status of the files by going into the Restore Page and looking to see if the files are there? And they are missing?

I am an engineer on the backup team so i'm going to get Live Mail installed on a test machine and see if someone can reproduce this issue

Adam,

I did not receive your message so I'll check spam filter. All the missing files are of eml type and indeed I'm checking the status by going into the Restore Page. When you try to reproduce this issue, make sure that you have emails in the storage folder, even better, create some subfolders in the storage folder to put the emails in. Not sure whether that makes the difference but the emails that are being backed up are the ones in the inbox of my main account (only).

Regards,

John

Hello John - I've sent you an email. Please post back here if you do not receive it.

Thanks,

Matt

John,

Sorry to hear about the issue you're having.  I havent had a chance to work with LiveMail all that much soI have a few questions for you and then perhaps I can suggest a solution:

1.) Where are livemail files stored on the machine?

2.) Did you have to manually add them to your backup set?  If so, did you add a folder, or add files individually?

3.) Have you excluded anything manually from you backup set (like right clicking and excluding a folder)

4.) what is the file extension for livemail files?

5.) To the best of your knowledge are all of the missing files email files from LiveMail or are others missing as well?

Thanks,

Adam
