NortonAntiVirus has stopped working

Hi all,

My Norton AntiVirus keeps crashing with a "Norton Antivirus has stopped working..." pop-up about every five minutes or so until the program will no longer open.

 Anyone experiencing something similar?

I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise and my NAV version is 21.0.1.3.

Default web browser is Firefox.

Hi AngryJackal:

Could you also tell us if you have any software from Bigfoot Networks e.g. Killer PCI-E?  A quick search shows that the conflicting module BfLLR.dll is associated with Bigfoot Networks software for a gaming adapter.

I do, actually. I believe it came with my motherboard.

Hi AngryJackal:

There have been issues with Atheros network cards and earlier versions of NIS/NAV (see here) and you might have uncovered a similar problem with your Bigfoot Killer network card.  The first thing I would recommend is that you install any available updates for your Bigfoot network card drivers and see if that solves the problem.

This might also be an issue with the network monitoring feature that comes with the Bigfoot Networks software.  There have even been a few cases reported in the forum where a PC manufacturer's built-in network monitoring software (e.g., Asus Network iControl, Applian Network Monitor - see Iancea's post here) caused a conflict with the NIS Smart Firewall.  Since NAV doesn't come with Norton's firewall this isn't directly applicable to your situation, but the Bigfoot Network monitoring software might be interfering with backgound NAV tasks (e.g., Automatic LiveUpdate) that are trying to connect to the Symantic servers when your computer is in idle mode.

Please note that I found one reference to Bigfoot Networks in the N360 forum here, but the user stopped posting before a solution was found for their problem.

Hi AngryJackal:

...and if the driver update doesn't work and you notice that NAV is crashing when you are playing a particular online game or running a specific program, you can create an exception for this program in your Silent Mode settings (Settings | General | Silent Mode Settings | User-Specified Programs | Configure).  This will turn on "Quiet Mode"  to suppress NAV background tasks any time that program is running.  This is a setting that gamers often tweak to improve their gaming performance.

Hi AngryJackal:

I've been doing a bit more research and I came across an article here about Qualcomm purchasing Bigfoot Network in 2011 and using their chipset in the Qualcomm Atheros Killer network cards, so my comment about an out-of-date driver could be relevant to the problem - see a recent post here in the OBS forum about crashes caused by BfLLR.dll.

If you are using the Norton Identity Safe Standalone product, could you also check the extension in your Firefox browser (Tools | Add-ons | Extensions) and confirm that you have the latest v. 2014.5.1.4 of the Norton Toolbar for Firefox 24 - see Mohan_G's post here.

Just wanted to let you know that I installed the latest driver for my Bigfoot network adapter an hour ago. We'll see if that fixes things. So far so good.
