I would like to report a bug in the Norton program AutoDetectPkg.exe, digitally signed September 3, 2011, 8:17am, and distributed worldwide from the
http://updatecenter.norton.com website.
This program is part of Step 1 of the process of upgrading to NIS 2012 from that website. When I access http://updatecenter.norton.com I get a box with a link entitled "Update Me Now", which states,
" Click on "Update Me Now" so we can automatically detect your installed Norton product and provide the latest version.
When I click on this link, I arrive at Step 1 of the update process, where the page says,
' The Norton Update Center is now downloading a small, secure program called "AutoDetectPkg.exe". This program checks for installed Norton products and automatically guides you to the correct product download page with further instructions '
It is this program, AutoDetectPkg,exe that is not working correctly.
When I save this file to my computer as instructed (Step 1) and then proceed to (Step 2) "Execute the application from the downloaded location", the program executes but when it finishes executing it displays the following screen, saying,
"No Norton product was found ... We're sorry but we were unable to find a Norton product on your computer."
However, my computer came pre-installed with NIS in 2009 and I have had NIS licensed continuously since the initial trial period and I now have over three months remaining in my current subscription. Everything is running and is up-to-date.
My computer has 101 currently installed programs that are displayed in the Add or Remove Programs section of the Control Panel, among which you can clearly see NIS 2011 as one of them. In addition, my C:\Program Files folder has a folder for Norton Internet Security, with 18.6.0.9 version installed. Furthermore, my NIS 2011 is running continuously on my computer.
Nonetheless, Norton's AutoDetectPkg.exe reports that it is unable to find a Norton Product on my computer.
Thus, I would like to know how to make a formal bug report to Symantec and receive a tracking number so that this bug is fixed. Clearly, if Norton cannot find NIS 2011 among the 101 programs that are installed on my computer, then there must be a problem.
Please note that I am not requesting any assistance in finding a workaround to this bug or for discovering alternative ways of accessing a download for NIS 2012. What I I wish to do is to report an obvious bug in a Norton program, and I would like to know what I have to do to make such a report and to see that this bug fixed as soon as possible.
Thanks, RichD
