I will try to avoid details and provide, in chronological order, the events leading up to the issue.
ISSUE:
Using the embedded Cybercrime Index link, the browser opens, there is a very brief long URL that changes within 1 second to a "Page not found" with the Norton site map below it - no Cybercrime index, just a bad link. The link, remember, is within the Norton Internet 2011 GUI.
How to Repeat:
- With the GUI open, click on the "Map Details" link. This changes a small area of the GUI.
- In the new area, is the link "View the Cybercrime Index" Click on it.
- The browser opens, there is a very brief flash and url changes to "http://www.symantec.com/errors/notfound.jsp"
Order of Events:
I reported this to Norton. The results were:
- "delete your browser cache".
- "Reboot the computer."
- "Do a scan in safe mode... to do this..."
After several calls, emails and tickets back and forth, I spoke a fellow who actually listened. He asked to put me on hold for and when he came back, stated that he was able to repeat it on 3 other computers. That's 4. Mine and his three.
He was going to pass it up the line to a 'supervisor' and someone would get back to me.
No one got back to me. One week later, I tested Maps > Cybercrime Index and that whole part was gone - no reference to Cybercrime index at all. About 2 weeks later I revisited the same internal links, and it was back. Aha, I thought they fixed it, but nope, same issue.
At the risk of losing my patience and becoming a patient, I re-re-re-reported it again.
One response, "thank you for contacting Norton, if you have any further problems or questions, do not hesitate to contact us". (or words to that affect.).
Since the first Cybercrfime Index URL flashes by so fast it is unreadable, I used a screen video capture, set it to record re-tried the link. Playing it back and slowly moving to the first URL, it reads:
"http://www.symantec.com/norton/redirect/cci.jsp?ptnm=ING%20Direct(90)&lgid=1033&pd=Norton%20Internet%20Security%20%202018.5.0.125&sub=356" Then the page jumps to "http://www.symantec.com/errors/notfound.jsp"
In reading the link that Norton has in the Cybercrime index link, it appears Norton is trying to grab an ad for ING Direct from ING, load it up and place it in to a page.
With ING moving that page, or it for whatever reason is not available, Norton redirects to a "page not found". That is the way it appears.
Well, no one, except that one tech, thinks Norton can have a problem, bug, or issue. I provided them with the links and exact means of reproducing the issue. They asked to access my computer (dual screen system). I was told they only want to check it for themselves. OK, I let the tech in.
I watched as she deleted some lines out of the local host file. Instead of commenting them out.
I watched as several changes were made to the startup in MSCONFIG. I watched as the Registry was edited. I watched as she checked the link, and always getting the same thing they had told me was not happening. 1 hour and 29 minutes she spent editing this, deleting that, disabling the other. Still, same issue - and - she could see it.
I have the 3 comp license. This 'Norton' thing is installed on a laptop. The same issue can be repeated on that laptop. That makes it five (5) computers, Norton's 3, my 2, where the issue is repeated.
When the tech called back today to access the comp again, I pointed out the damage done. She said she was only collecting data! So, my answer was "No, you are not accessing it again".
Now I'm being 'uncooperative'. And, if I don't cooperate, there is nothing they can do to help me. It is I, who was (note "was") trying to help Nort.
To remain 'cooperative', I must give them carving rights to my system.
I don't like paying full price for something and not have all of it work. It's like getting married and finding out she doesn't like sex!
Anyone, anyone at all, even the snobs, cynics, and rude ones here with that holier than thou attitude are welcome to suggest ideas. But be warned, if you chose to prove you're an a s s, you've wasted your time, bandwidth and only proving what you are - it's your image - do as you please while remembering, I don't feed the trolls.
If others here don't have the answer, maybe John Thompson, CEO and/or a Board of Director might know the answer.
Ideas?
