Very strange. What version are you using?
93curr,
To get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:
What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn
If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal commercial version please be sure to tell us.
If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.
Windows XP
Version 2002
System Pack 2
Pentium (R) CPU 2.40GHz
2.39 GHz, 256MB of RAM
Local Disc (C:) Properties
Used: 730 GB

You are using a way outdated version of NIS. NIS 2010 has been out for along time now and thats version 17. Best to upgrade to NIS 2010 and get a bigger hard drive. 95% of today's pc's come with a 320GB hard drive or larger. When is the last time you used Windows Disk cleaner? Did you ever try CCleaner to clean your HDD of all unnessary clutter? I am sure there are programs you dont need that you can uninstall to gain space.
93curr
There seems to be a discrepency between the size of your C: drive as stated in your Subject line and in the text where you say:
Local Disc (C:) Properties
Used: 730 GB
Free: 1.47 GB
Is there perhaps a decimal missing there and you have 73.0 GB used?
Certainly you are short on RAM and hard drive if it is perhaps an 80GB hard drive (is it a laptop by any chance?)
I've just been dealing with a Compaq for a family member that came with an 80GB hard drive and it was working fine (but with 1GB of RAM) until he started taking a lot of photos!
Let's leave on one side the question of getting a new drive and concentrate on what you have.
I'd rather one of the gurus or one of the Norton Staff (names in red) dealt with what you have said about that large number of AV definitions since I don't know the version that you have apart from the fact that it would it likely dates back to 2002 or 2003, like XP itself!
Although you do not qualify for a free upgrade to the current NIS 2010 you do qualify for the upgrader's price if you buy from Norton online and if you find a cheap copy in the stores of 2010 or even 2009 you can use the KEY from that to activate the 2010 version that you can download.
Dieselman makes a good point about running the Disk Clean that is built into Windows -- open up your My Computer icon and right mouse click on the icon for your Drive C: then select Properties and on that TAB below the pie diagram you will see a button for Disk Clean -- click on that and after it scans your drive it will come up with a list of items, each with a checkbox, and how much could be restored by deleting the items. Select all those of any size and then OK for it to clean up.
Then see how much free space you have.
Let us know some more about the situation.
Yeah; that should read 73.0 GB - my bad. (not a laptop; it's a (pretty old) Dell desktop)
Apparently there's not enough space on the C: drive to make more space on the C: drive. There's not enough space for LiveUpdate to work either. I've been getting popups for about the past month with the computer asking me to make more space on the C: drive, but every effort to use Disk Cleanup does nothing - it runs for awhile and then just turns off. That's when I started going through my files to see what I could delete manually and discovered how much space the Symantic folder was using. A check of the individual files (thousands of 'em!) made me suspect there's a lot of unnecessary duplication.
The reason disk cleanup runs for ever is cause you have so much junk on your pc. Also why dont you try uninstalling programs you dont need. Or else get a bigger hard drive or an external backup drive. Use CCleaner.

It may not all be "junk". 93curr has identified the Virus Defs Folder as being the largest problem at 67GB.
Based upon the version numbers presented, I am getting conflicting information in trying to resolve which Norton version you have.
If no other identifiable information is available, could you post a screenshot of your Norton User Interface? Alternatively, you could visit the Update Center here and select the automated "Update Me Now". This may or may not assist in identifying your version.
As mentioned, updating to the newest version will help as the definitions are handled more efficiently and do not consume anywhere near the file size you currently have.
93curr,
Yes 73GB makes more sense!
Hard drives are dirt cheap these days and RAM is not that expensive although it can be sometimes for the older varieties so I'd suggest:
Work with the others who are offering specific constructive guidance -- in particular establish what version of which Norton Product you have as Phil D asks and on cleaning up, as you started by asking. Take as a guiding principle that you do NOT delete anything unless you know exactly what it is and what it is there for -- I've seen so many people come for help after cleaning up their computer and getting rid of stuff that is not needed .... and then finding it does not work!
Consider getting a larger hard drive, but if you do don't go overboard since some older BIOS versions do not recognize more than a certain size of hard drive. If you do decide to move on this get advice here or locally -- it would help to know the exact model Dell you have so that it can be looked up to find out more information on the hard drives and the RAM.

It doesn't seem to work. The download box shows up, but it's empty. (Possibly I dont have enough space for it to operate?) And I don't know how to post a screenshot of the user interface.
Okay.
Here is a good link outlining how to upload images to the forums.
Please be advised that images will be reviewed for content before they are publicly visible, so don't be surprised if you see an image placeholder in your post pending image approval.
If you have never captured a screenshot:
1) To capture the entire view of the monitor screen, press the "Print Screen" key. To capture only the active window, hold the "Alt" key and press "Print Screen". Either method will copy the image to the Windows internal clipboard.
2) Open MS Paint or another imaging program. Click "Edit" > "Paste"
3) Save the image as a jpeg or png file.
4) Click on your Forum user name and upload the image to your Norton Image Gallery.
93curr,
Does your PC have USB sockets on it and do you have a thumbdrive with some space on it? If so it might be worth trying the portable version of CCleaner that has been mentioned that you can put on a thumbdrive and run from there.
This from the CCleaner website -- Piriform are a thoroughly reputable source of utilities that are simple.
We also offer a portable version for installing on USB thumb drives.
Visit the builds page to download.
CCleaner - Portable
Zip file, no installer
But you might have to get a friend to download it and put it on the thumbdrive for you to use or do you have another computer also -- are you posting here from the slow computer?
Hi 93curr,
This doesn't exactly solve the issue, but the only way I have been able to solve this(seen it twice), is to uninstall Norton, delete the folder and then reinstall. Unfortunately, the folder will probably remain even if you run NRT twice(and in Safe Mode) hence why you will have to manually delete the folder!

Internet Security Version 9.1.1.7

You don't have 2 versions of Norton running do you? That would cause problems.
Good point mo. I would completely uninstall Norton and reboot. Use the Norton Removal Tool and reboot. Delete what ever foolders are left over and then check your drive space. Reinstall either NIS?NAV 2010.
Thanks DougL,
I think what none of knew was whether one could delete that folder with so many GB of files in it or not .....
1.47GB (is it gigabyte or megabyte?) should be enough to download anything, even Norton updates which are small. 1,47 MB will not be enough!
Your version(s) appears to be Norton Internet Securitty 2006.
With version 2006, when listing the version numbers, NIS and AV were seperately listed with their respective version numbers.
Coming to think of it :NIS 2006 had a seperate dialog for its general options. (go to : Control Panel, Norton Internet Security). There are the tabs where you can specify the general options for NIS. There is a tab where you can specify the space for Norton updates. Change the number there to 150 MB, in any case to a smaller number than stated there, so cleanup is triggered. 150MB should be enough by far. After that NIS should do some self-cleaning. This may give you a working system again.
As you have NIS 2006, you should be eligable for a free update to NIS 2010. You should be able to download/install NIS 2010 for free. This is by far the best solution.
First you have to remove NIS 2006, as stated above with NRT and then download/install NIS 2010 from here :
Look up and save your Norton serial number(s) before you do anything else!! You might need that for re-registring.
After that you have two advantages :
- You are using the current and better-protecting NIS2010
- You regained some 60GB of space.
General options for the update space can also be : Control Panel, LiveUpdate. I think there is the space tab
Look for either one of them.
Where in the control panel should I be finding Norton Internet Security? Other than "add or remove programs" I'm not locating it.
Where do I find the Norton serial numbers?
LiveUpdate refuses to run.
And (if you haven't already figured out that I really don't know what I'm doing and am totally flying blind here) is deleting the 2006 program simpoy a case of removing the program using the "add or remove program" category? (and will I be allowed to remove all the Virusdefs manually once I've removed the program?)
