Norton's eating up 67 GB of my 75 GB C: drive!

Plse try to read carefully and answer as much questions asked. In that way we, volunteers, can help you in the best way!

Question 1 : how much space is left on your harddisk, 1,47 GB of 1,47 MB? As i  said before, if 1,47 GB should really be enough to run Liveupdate, so then you have another problem, probably a rotten NIS 2006.

Question 2 : if you click on the Norton icon, right on the taskbar, you should be able to see if the text 'Norton Internet Security 2006' is there at the bottom. Is it there? So then you definitely know which version you have.

If Norton Internet Security is not in the Control Panel, is there something in the Control Panel like 'Symantec Live Update' or 'Norton Liveupdate' or simply 'Liveupdate'? Then that's what you need to decrease space for updates.

I told that in my last post here. The entry in the control panel is NOT for running Liveupdate, but for updating it's settings and so eventually release some space on your harddisk!!

I do not have NIS2006 anymore, so i cannot look it up for you what the exact wording is.

You should be able to find your key or serial number here :

https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/changeLangLog.do?langCode=EN

If you don't know your user and/or password for that site (anymore) or your key/serial number(s), the best and quickest way is to contact Symantec customer support. They should be able to help you find the key.

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs

The link is for the USA, change the country at the top of the screen, if you live somewhere alse.

Live chat support works fine and the quickest, sometimes you may have to wait awhile, because they are busy.

Tell them that you have a problem with NIS 2006 and want to install NIS 2010 now. Also ask if that's possible with your current version's key. I still think you should be eligible for a free update to NIS210, if you have NIS2006 of course.

After having the key, if you want to remove Norton 2006 and install NIS 2010, follow exactly the following steps and ask here if one step does not succeed  :

1  - First remove NIS 2006 and Liveupdate via Add/Remove Programs and, if asked, also remove your user settings with that

2  - Download and run the Norton Removal Tool TWICE and reboot in between (that's for erasing the remnants of NIS 2006 completely) from here :

http://www.symantec.com/symnrt

3. Then look if the files are still there. They should not be there. If still there : remove them.

3 - Download and install NIS2010 from here :

http://www.norton.com/nis10

4. Run Liveupdate from the NIS 2010 main panel, untill there are nomore updates

Then you're done.

Hi 93curr,

A colleague suggested running chkdsk /r.

Regards,

DougL

There's 1.32 GB left on the C: drive right now. (73.1 GB used)

Yes; definitely Norton Internet Security 2006

I do appreciate all your patience, by the way.

Please do a complete uninstall of NIS 2006. Its very outdated. Then run a complete disk clean up and defrag. Come back and let us know how much drive space you have. Then download and install NIS 2010. Best download NIS 2010 before doing anything.

93curr,

Now go for it, go and install NIS2010. As your Liveupdate will not run, you might be vulnerable for new viruses with NIS2006.

Follow my procedure above and add some more cleaning to step3 as Dieselman326 suggested (the first step3, i see i did not number the steps in the right way).

One or two hours of work and you're done.

93curr,

did you solve your problem and how?
