Evidently this is a long running rpoblem. All the posts have said it before-Windows Defender keeps showing up as being turned off whne booting up and has to be turned on-blah blah blah---I have two identical computers and one shows this message at bootup and the other one doesn't and all the settings are the same for both so what is the problem??Norton has no answer that I know of -an e mail from thier tech support said about going into services from control panel and disabling it-but it still shows up as being turned off-so now what??It is frustrating that it happens only on one computer and not ther other identical computer
Linusthebeagle Hi,
Firstly, welcome to the community.
You would be well advised to upgrade to NIS 2011, which is free during the currency of your subscription.
It is not recommended to have more than one security program running on a computer, so why do you want Windows Defender to be turned on?
If this does not solve your problem, please give us full details of your operating system and hardware. This will enable others to suggest a solution.
When you are satisfied that the issue has been solved, please mark the answer as such, so that others may benefit from the advice given to you.
Cheers,
drshlomo.

This is my Windows Defender setup. Maybe it'll work for you.
* Windows Defender > Services (Local) > Automatic (Started)
* Windows Defender Disabled at Startup via Windows Defender > Tools > Software Explorer > Startup Programs > Show for all users > Microsoft Corporation > Windows Defender > Disabled
* Windows Defender Disabled Auto Scan and Real Time Protection via Windows Defender > Tools > Options > untic Auto Scan and untic Real Time.
Hope this helps

When you have your Norton product installed, then windows defender should be turned off as you don't want 2 real time antivirus programs running at once. If you had windows defender turned on while you were installng your Norton product, you most likely didn't get a proper install of your Norton product. The improper install probably is resulting in those warnings.
Happy Holidays !

As I recall my initial Norton install...some years back. Norton Disabled WinDef. As I use WinDef for it's Tools. I setup WinDef to retain access to WinDef and for WinDef to not interfere with my system / Norton.
Fun read Windows Defender and McAfee
