I have a problem I hope someone can help me with.
Am building a computer for a friend. After installation of the OS (WinXP Pro + SP3), I installed a few other programs he wanted installed without incident. During that process, I installed a copy of the Free SuperAntiSpyware program, but forgot to install Norton AV (which the owner wanted to try out). Anyway, after hooking up to the internet, setting up their email client, and doing some surfing, I somehow got hit with a couple of trojans that the SuperAntiSpyware program alerted on. I ran a scan with SAS and it came up with a few spyware cookies and the two trojans mentioned. I had SAS clean the problems from the computer, but apparently one of the trojans had already made changes that have since been a real problem.
After SAS cleaned the offending trojans, ... I downloaded and installed a trial of Norton Antivirus. After completing the install, I tried to update the definition files, and was unable to do so. Since Then, I've tried to download and install a couple other AV programs, and had the same issue with not being able to update the virus definitions. I tried to run a few of the online av/malware scans (including the one on the Symantec site), but none of the activeX files will download, so the scans were not able to run.
One of the trojans obviously made changes that have blocked access to any of the various antivirus definition update sites, and I don't know what I need to do to correct the problem. I sure would appreciate someone clueing me in on how I need to proceed to get thing running properly again.
Thanks,
Disaksen
