Not happy with 360v2 back up file format

Add me to the list of people not happy with the back up file format used in 360v2

 

 

it was not broke, it did not need to be changed......PLEASE can we get back the old feature ASAP.

 

Did you ever think about a option between full data format and archival????

 

I need to know if this back up option is going to be restored, my continued use of this product depends on this asnwer.

The file format the data is stored in. Absolutely appreciated the prior versions full file format back up.   The old version I could use the software… or In my need to restore one file, I could access the backup disk and navigate directly to the file, which typically only takes 4-5 mouse click all at the speed of a hard drive and my fingers to navigate to. vs. *Load N3602

*Select file restore, I next have to wait each dialog box to open…

*Select the back up set > Why the program does not list available back up sets or defaults to the only set ever created is a separate question…*Select the File group and/or do a full search… with hope I recall the exact file name… sure glad at least wild cards . still work here as I did not recall the exact name this time…*After the search is complete select the one file*Wait for the program to pull this out of the archive.  Now I’m forced to always use the program, data rescue is available only one way… and my data and the program or prorgam install disk might not always be in the same place be it a few files I need to restore or a complete data recovery.   Basically you took away a reliable means of emergency data rescue and accessibility, in doing so created limitations and restrictions to retrieving my own data. How is this thinking customer oriented?

I'm sorry that you are not satisfied with the security measures for the Norton 360 v2 Backup. The product is customer oriented by creating a secure method of storing data for users without the means of other storage methods (image-based, incremental storage, etc).

 

From what I've read, it seems that your concern is rather with the ease-of-use in accessing the files of a backup. If you are looking for a product that will provide this granular interaction with the data, I would recommend Norton Ghost 14. This product will let you 'drill down' into backup images to access specific files, and allow you to restore files from a specific time in backup history. Thanks! 

While you do advertise added security for v2 in the back up process, I can not find reference to actual data format changes of that data. Adding security to a backup program should be an option, not a platform change to the backup process that was already in place.

 

I'm uncomfortable however with your reply, after spending the money for a upgraded product,  that I can only learn in hindsight changes the functionality of a core component to a less desired format, your best answer is to spend more money to buy yet another product?

 

Question: If a person did backup with v1, then installed V2, can V2 restore the files from a V1 back up?

If you used the same Norton Account for both v1 and v2, then then files stared with v1 can be accessed and restored with v2.

 

My best answer to you in this situation is to find a backup solution that meets your specific needs. From this post, it is clear that Norton 360 v2 is not satisfactory for you. Whether or not you return this product and buy Norton Internet Security and Norton Ghost to meet your security and backup needs, it's up to you. My recommendation for anyone who is not satisfied with a product is to get the product that meets their needs.

Tony's response applies to online backup. I'd also like to clarify for local backup.  If you install N360 v2.0 and you have an N360 v1.0 backup stored on an external drive or network share or DVD you can still restore it using N360 v2.0.

 

As I stated in a previous thread we have definitely taken this feedback to heart and we are working on ways to keep the improvements that the new v2.0 format provide while also improving the usability so that you can just browse to files in a way that is intutive and restore them or verify that they are backed up.

Tested the V1 restore on a local drive using V2 to restore the files and all worked fine. fhew...

 

I thing to consider, when I did a file restore Norton only looked for a back up set called "N360_BACKUP", default names are o.k.

but creates user limitation you might want to reconsider. It's a issue when two different computers are sending data back to one hard drive, sure one can make unique name folders to store the back up in... but anytime you have like file names for sensitive data you run the risk of data confusion issues. I see this as a problem when someone other then person who set up the software might have to rescue the lost/missing data.

 

It was a bit of a slam that 832 megs of data on another computer is now being stored in a new format, it would have been nice to get a warning about this format change before the upgrade to V2. I could have saved the prior back up set had I know!

 

With V1 I could easily confirm the prior backup format in data structure and file integrity with the full file/directory structure backup. Now I'm forced to trust this is done 100% right, or do as I did, experiment with random samples of a variety of files from assorted directories to see if the data was in fact back up. (Had no time to do sample a 100% restore)

 

Before I could compare directory structures for file counts and size as a quick reference... now I have 16 folders of computer garble.

For me, you did not make my data more secure, you limited the option of accessibility.

 

Norton should really put something quick into V2 to advise at least of the data format change, it's information that is missing from product advertising, online help, and the program when you set up V2.

In N360 v1 we prevent (warn) the user from sending data from 2 machines to the same destination.  In N360 v2.0 we solved this by storing data in the N360_BACKUP folder under a specific subfolder for the backup set so you can store as many backups to a device as you want.  The main reason for defaulting to the N360_BACKUP folder is to enable N360 to easily identify the locations of all existing backup sets in order to present them to the user.  This is helpful for novice users. 

 

We have talked about the possibility of giving the advanced user more control over where backups get stored, however.  So this is on our radar.

Maped the drive I'm sending the files/folders to, create seperate folders on that mapped hard drive for the two diff back up sets to get stored to, then schedule the back ups to run at diff times to prevent conflict.

You have made this program less useful to many people and your defensive rhetoric is of no use to anyone. So if you want to answer the needs of your customers you could tell us why this format was changed? What benefit are you claiming we will receive ?

 

Or perhaps, instead of suggesting that we buy another one of your programs, you could suggest how we could go back to the old version of the product.

I apologize if my earlier comments sounded defensive; that certainly was not my intent. We strongly support the concepts of creating products that are not only useful to many people, but also the idea of creating different products for different types of customers. The customer who posted earlier seemed to want a more in-depth backup program, and wanted more control over the backup sets. For this reason, I recommended a Symantec product that gave this functionality.

 

The concept of Norton 360 v2 is that of an All-In-One Security product, that runs quietly in the background without confusing security alerts; a type of "set it and forget it" security product. Since there are many customers who want the security of Norton Internet Security and the Backup functionality as well, Norton 360 v2 provides both in an easy to use product. Norton 360 is oriented toward computer users who want this type of product.

I put N360V1 on 5 computers, I was very happy with what the original back up program provided.

 

My core issue remains the data format the files were changed to.

N360v1 was a complete file format storage method, V2 uses an archival method.

 

Security is fine when security is needed, I'm unhappy you removed what was one of the most simple part of data retrieval from that original back up set. 

 

The data format change has been expressed as a security measure for online storage - so why not limit this to just online storage?

 

However this change totally ignored the format and feature of the original product. This data change came with no warning, nothing was provided in documentation, help files, set up, or online with your website. How fair is that to the customer.

 

N360V1 did give me a solid back up solution I could set and forget, the issue -is- data retrieval. You changed this program so it now always requires N360V2 to restore anything. The full file format had me sold on the product, now anytime I have to restore even one file it's always requires N360V2.

 

What do I do when N360V2 is not available where and when I need to restore that data? a limitation that did not exist with V1!
