Personally I would say it is dangerous to use 2003. There have been lot's of improvements , especially 2008.

You could try using the Norton Removal Tool

and reinstall 2008

I suggest you to use the 2008 version of NIS. The issue might have happened due to damaged windows installer.Follow the link given below to install the latest version of Windows installer.

 Windows Installer

Then run the Norton removal tool using the link  SymNRT

Then install the NIS 08 from the link NIS 08  and activate it using your product key.

I did use the Norton Removal Tool and tried to reinstall it ask for Windows Installer.

I did all the fixes for the installer and reinstalled my system. no go, thinking if I had the NIS 08 CD I would have a better out come with this.

Windows Installer only effects updating IE 6 to 7 and NIS 08 at this time…

thanks for your help!

Some reason Windows Installer does not like to network share with IE 7 or NIS 08 install. Will work with all other Windows and Nortons updates…

Did a Norton Removal again, removed Windows Installer and had to clean up the Registry and take out the Symantec folder. Seems like Norton high jacks the Registry even when it is removed…

Anyway got NIS 08 running, and big brother is watching over me…
