Notification of outgoing email scanning

PoulsboGuy,

I don't believe that "container files" are scanned by the e-mail scanning. I just disabled auto-protect and sent the EICAR.COM file using Thunderbird and it was detected by e-mail scanning. As you've noted, I didn't see a scan progress bar, but the EICAR file is pretty small and fast. I'll continue to research this though. Right now it just seems like the scan status may not be showing up.

I think part of the situation may be the use of "progress indicator" in the configuration settings for email scanning.

Display progress indicator

Displays a progress window while Norton Internet Security scans your outgoing email messages

For me that means a moving bar as something proceeds and I'm sure that earlier versions of NIS had this. But I've never seen one with outgoing email with attachments and I've sent some images.

I do get a popup saying it is scanning email but I don't recollect anything indicating percentage or progress.

Reese, what did you observe that told you eicar.com was detected by email scanning?  I tried the same thing with Windows Mail and got no indication at all.

huwyngr, by popup do you mean the little envelope icon in the notification area?  That's the one I would like to see and don't.  I can live without the progress window, whatever that is or was.

For me the major indicator is watching the packets go out to my router.  Mail should leave Windows Mail, relatively quickly and then Norton should start its scan of attachments.  Its not happening like that.  Windows mail starts to send, the packets start counting; Windows mail completes, the packets stop counting.  Norton isn't getting into that process anywhere.

No -- I get a big popup in the bottom corner of the screen similar in size to the Idle Time scan saying working in the background.

I had turned OFF at the moment the one for Display icon in System Tray but I've turned it ON again and I'll watch next time I send email. May not be right away unless I send one to me .....

I have both indicators enabled and neither shows up.

Do you have any kind of pop-up blocking enabled?

I use the one in Google toolbar.

Maybe one needs to OK NIS for this to appear?

as I said, I don't mind not getting the popup (I do get it for other Norton functions, by the way).  I'd like to see the little envelope.  Like I do for incoming.

I got a toaster pop-up in the lower right corner indicating that e-mail scanning detected the threat.

P.S. What ports is Windows Mail using to access your servers? Only the standard SMTP and POP3 ports are scanned.
