NPE.exe

Working quietly when I get a Norton window saying 'Error 3084' and inviting me to download NPE.exe. Think: how do I know if this is real or bogus? Look up NPE.exe. Mixed advice but it appears to be a malware removal tool. A malware removal tool for an error?? Being gullible, I download anyway. Not a lot happens except another Norton window with a big exclamation mark saying that NPE.exe is NOT TRUSTED. Shut down and use another computer.

Can anyone help with:

    Was this a bogus warning?

    What is Error 3084?

If genuine, why is a Norton tool not trusted by Norton??

Is nrnr.exe safer to use than NPE.exe?, because one of the Norton techs used it during a remote tech fix and when he was done not only did it NOT fix the original problem,i couldn't get back on line to TELL him, and it forced me to have to do a refresh to get back on line.So i'm very leery of NPE.exe:smileysurprised:

The two tools are for totally different uses.

NRNR is used to refresh a possibly corrupted install of your Norton Product. A very safe tool

NPE can be a very dangerous tool in the wrong hands. It will do a deep scan for malware, and will recommend files that should be removed. The problem is, if a user does not understand what the files being removed are for, they can end up with system that is unbootable. The reason is that some malware can alter or replace Windows operating system files, that NPE wants to remove. Then you cannot boot.

NPE is only recommeded to be used under supervision of a Malware Removel Expert.

Hi rss245x,

Those are some excellent suggestions. Thank you for taking the time.

I will do my best to fulfill some of these around NPE. In other cases, I will forward to those that can review your product suggestions.

I will also file a defect around the blank result. That is not helpful at all.

We are currently working hard to deliver new value as fast as we can in NPE, so please stay tuned.

Thank You,

Jeff
