Ns.exe is a CPU hog

I've recently upgraded from Norton 360 to Norton Security.

Unfortunately I often see ns.exe hogging a lot of CPU. Basically - when it happens - it will take up two full CPU cores. There's no way to get out of it other than booting the computer. I also see ns.exe taking up 500 MB RAM ("Private Working Set" in Task Manager) when in this situation while it will only take up about 15 MB when idle. I've got an suspicion that the problem is related to low memory on the system but it seems ns.exe could potentially hog more of the memory than the 500 MB - if it was available. So in essence - when the problem occurs - I have a computer where two CPU cores are fully occupied by ns.exe and the system seem to be swapping heavily because of the low memory. So it is very sluggish. In this situation Norton Security isn't responding any more (I cannot bring up any menus, etc) but other applications on the computer are as there's still a bit of juice left on the computer (I have 4 physical cores) although it will take say 1 min just to close down Word. Even if I close down all applications on the computer ns.exe will still be in a spin. The only solution I've found is to boot the computer.

What to do?

Never had problems with Norton 360.
