I am using online backup and it tells me I have 6.1 of 7.0 GB available. However, when I run a preview on a backup set it tells me I need 3.8 GB of space for the back up. Which is correct? Am I doing something wrong? Does it compress online?
I think I need to clarify...when I run a backup preview it states I need 3.8 GB of space. However after I run the backup, it tells me it only used .9GB of my available space. Why the difference?
Thanks.

I'm going to take a quick guess here. Backups are encrypted in your computer for transmission to the Norton server. I suspect that they are processed there to compact them and give you the most possible space. They would still be encrypted for security reasons. Nothing official in what I say
Hope this helps
Thanks. I'll bet you are correct.
Maybe, maybe not. There are variables to consider when running backups. Some of the key items to ask:
- Are you changing the default selection between the time of the calculation and the actual backup?
- Is it giving you that estimate every time or was it only the first backup?
- Are you getting any errors about files in use?
The service does utilize compression but its more for speeding up transfers, the encryption and back-end storage. It wouldn't change your overall storage.
