Online Family Norton vs. Norton Parental Controls add on

Hello,

I want to set up parental control software on my son's pc, and want to know which product to go with.  His pc is a pentium 4 running XP Professional with SP3.  It also has Norton Internet Security 2009 running on it, and no other internet security/anti virus software.  He has both the Firefox and IE8 browsers.

My son only visits about 5 sites regularly, so I want to use the program that will keep him only on those sites without slowing down his computer (it is already kind of slow).  The main sites he visits are kiddie game sites (clubpenguin, playcrafter, and roblox.com).  He doesn't use any email or instant messaging.

If I could block out all other sites except for the few he visits he would probably be happy enough--and then whitelist the ones he wants to go to.  My main concern is not further slowing down his computer--so in this instance, would the Parental Control add on be the way to go, or is Online Family Norton a better choice?  Which would allow me to limit his sites to just the safe ones that I designate, without slowing his computer down?  And if speed is not an issue to distinguish between them, what features does Online Family Norton have that makes it the better choice?

Sorry for the elementary questions, but I'm just getting started with this whole Parental Control thing,

Thanks--Pcmom4

I have added roblox.com to the list of allowed web sites, but my son still cannot join a game there.  Is there something else we need to add/change?

Hi MillerJamesD,

Please make sure you have clicked "UPDATE SETTINGS" button after you put roblox.com to the allowed list on the page.

If you have done that, please tell us which specific game he is not able to join.

What is the setting for category Gaming under Settings -> Web, blocked or not blocked?

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks for your reply!

He is able to browse the roblox.com website and select a game to play, but when he enters the game, it says "This game is not available.  Please try another.".  These are his favorite games that he has played for months.

Since trying to work with OnlineFamily.Norton.com we've also tried many other random roblox games, and none are working.  I suspect that they are using another port besides the standard www TCP port 80.  Gaming does not have a red X on it, so Gaming is set to allowed.

Attached is a screenshot of settings...  Download the .log file and rename it to a .jpg file to see the image.

I suspect that they are using another port besides the standard www TCP port 80, and maybe a different protocol, and OnlineFamily is blocking that communication port and/or protocol.

Hi MillerJamesD,

I was trying to reproduce the error, but not getting the exact message.  Please provide a sample game name or the url to the game page, and I'll try again.

Thanks,

Katie

I prefer to use ProteMac KeyBag.

Ok I found out 4 things.  In OnlineFamily.Norton.com Web Site settings:

1) Un-X the Gaming category.  (I had already done this.)

2) Add the roblox.com web site as a specific web site to allow.  (I had already done this.)

3) Add the fimservecdn.com web site as a specific web site to allow.  This seems to house RoBlox instructions files. (I had NOT done this.)

4) Add the cloudfront.net web site as a specific web site to allow.  This is the site that hosts RoBlox game play. (I had NOT done this.)

MillerJamesD,

Thanks for the update.  We will try to reproduce it.

Thanks,

Katie

Hi MIllerJamesD,

I keep getting the message "Failed to connect the Game (ID=15)" when trying to play a game, which is not exactly the same message you received.  I receive the message with Norton Safety Minder installed on the PC or not, so I"m not sure how the issue is related to the OnlineFamily program.

Do you have any updates on the issue?

Thanks,

Katie

MillerJamesD,

Does it help if you give the kid's account administrative rights?

Thanks,

Katie
