OnlineFamily.Norton vs. NIS Parental Controls

I have NIS 2009 and downloaded the Parental and Privacy Controls. Actually, I'm only interested in the Parental Controls. Symantec also provides the OnlineFamily.Norton service, which seems quite similar to NIS Parental Controls. I can't seem to find a feature-for-feature comparison of OnlineFamily.Norton and NIS Parental Controls...is there such a comparison?

When I downloaded Parental and Privacy Controls, I was surprised to see Symantec encouraging me to get OnlineFamily instead. Does this mean that Symantec plans to eventually drop support for Parental Controls in NIS?

Hi ,

Welcome to Norton Forums. Answering to your question there is a much difference between OnlineFamily.Norton and NIS Parental

Control. In NIS Parental Controls you can stop your Child from browsing blocked web-sites,block your child from sending privacy infomation.

In OnlineFamily.norton if your child had been blocked, he/she can ask the permission of the parent by sending a note  saying "Mom I need to access this web-site for finishing my class work" etc.

In addition to that in Onlinefamily.norton you can set up time restrictions for your children to use the computer by specifying the total amount of time that a child is allowed to use the computer on weekdays and weekends. When the child exceeds the total time that is allowed, OnlineFamily.Norton reports this on the Time tab of the Activity page

OnlineFamily.norton also keeps an eye on social networking pages visited by Child. For example if your child had visited www.facebook.com online family  will report

The name of the social networking Web site that your child visited
    * The account ID that your child used to log on to the social networking Web site
    * The age that your child specified while registering on a social networking Web site
    * The date on which the child visited the social networking Web site
    * The number of times that the child visited each of the social networking Web site

Onlinefamily.norton provides a cool feature named Instant Messaging. You can set up OnlineFamily.Norton to manage instant messaging (IM) activities of your children. To view and manage the IM conversations of your children, you must first turn on chat monitoring in OnlineFamily.Norton.

By using the Instant Messaging activity report, you can do the following:

    * View the name of the child who has engaged in IM conversations with your child.
    * Block any IM friend from communicating with your child in the future.
    * View the IM friend that your child has communicated with.
    * View the time at which any IM conversation has taken place.

If your child tries to send personal information or send an IM to a blocked IM friend, these attempts are blocked. These inappropriate activities are marked in red on the Internet activity report.

I would suggest you to use Onlinefamily.norton because of new cool features and enhanced parental control features

Thank you, SendOfJive and kaykay. Okay, I'm sold. I don't really need the additional features of OnlineFamily - my son is too young to know about IM'ing, Facebook and the like - but I feel it's never too early for me to learn about these things, so I'll be ready when the time comes.

A few technical questions:

1. Should I/Can I uninstall NIS Parental Controls in order to use OnlineFamily? Will the two conflict with each other?

2. My subscription to NIS 2009 has almost 10 months to go, so I'll be getting NIS 2010 as soon as it goes final. Should I wait for 2010 before installing OnlineFamily?

Thanks for your help.

Have a Good Day!

You need not uninstall NIS parental controls. Both will not conflict with each other.

You don't have to wait for NIS 2010 to get Online Family. The NIS 2009 settings could be migrated to NIS 2010 once it is installed over NIS 2009.

Hope this helps you. Thanks

Thank you. I actually uninstalled the add-on pack anyway, since OnlineFamily.Norton does everything NIS Parental Controls did - and more - and I wasn’t interested in the Privacy Controls.
