Opera Browser version 18 and Norton 360

Hello again :smileyhappy:

Have Norton 360 21.1.0.18

currently using firefox 26 browser.

don't use IE don't use Chrome.

see that Opera 18 isn't supported with safeweb Norton toolbar or identity vault.

My question is: Am I protected by Norton 360 while using Opera 18 ?

I'm not quite sure how it works but I think I'd like to try it out but only if I'm protected from worms viruses trojans malware etc while using it. Otherwise, I won't bother trying it out.

Thanks!

Hi F4E

Thanks for getting back to me

the preferences you mentioned...are they in the browser tools or somewhere in my Norton 360 settings?

also any advice you could give me would be awesome and much appreciated.

I think I might download Chrome. I've gotta have a backup browser and I just don't like IE. All the windows gobbledygook services that goes with it... don't know what to turn on auto or manual or disable...it's all so darned confusing. lol So I just used the remove windows services and got rid of IE and a few other services I didn't know what they were so I figured I didn't need them lol. Cable company came a couple of days ago and did something to my computer he wasn't supposed to do ...so in trying to figure THAT out and undo it, I yanked myself offline and when it reconnected it was to some unknow network 6 and it said it was connected but in my taskbar it had a yellow triangle with an exclamation point and when I went into my Norton to check the network security it had two computers listed on the network...??? I noticed later in security history that it sent an error report to symantec that there was an error in the 360 program  and checking further, my info was shared over this unknown network.

I don't know what was shared but it threw me into a doubleplus ungood anxiety attack lol

I called the cable company and they started to give me a hard time over the phone when I asked them to reset the modem for me from their end, that attempting to troubleshoot it several times was unsuccessful. I kept getting that unknown network for some reason.

He kept arguing with me like I was some kind of idiot (which I'm not) he wouldn't let me get a word in edgewise, he kept running his motor mouth telling me (quite loudly lol) that I had to restore my computer that there was something terribly wrong with it etc etc etc.

I said please...just listen to me. I ran my scans mbam norton 360 superantispyware no flags. I deleted all my old restore points so I can't restore because there's nowhen to restore to.

Oh...also....remoting was enabled when I checked in my services. that's how whoever got in...got in.

He said well can you open your Internet Explorer. I said I don't have internet explorer. He yelled at me about that lol

I said would you just do me a favor...reset the modem or whatever it is you do...give me a new address...so I can connect back to my old network #() and we'll see if it works.

after a long pause he did. gave me a new 'address' and wella! there's my network up and running! yay!

I said can you just hang on for one more minute, let me restart my computer and see if everything's still good after boot?

another long pause lol

so while he was thinking about it I rebooted and logged back on and yippppy skippppyyyy I'm up and running.

what a fiasco lolol

Anyway. I'm hearing not so great things about chrome lately. already have google mail address written down somewhere on my desk here if I can find it lol.

Norton 360 play nice with google chrome or no? Gotta have a backup browser. Hoping for one that's compatible.

The version of IE I uninstalled was 11. I didn't like it much. at all.

tell me about the chrome please? and the preferences in opera just in case I go that route?

If you've read all that and you're still here for this sentence, you get kudos for being brave lol

Thanks!

Hi, Paula. Looks like he just reset your modem and now you have a new Isp address, which got you back online. All good, there.

Personally, I'd avoid Chrome because I don't like Google's sneekiness re privacy, and I feel that Opera might be a bit involved as far as setting it up to your liking is involved.

Firefox is my default browser. It's easy to set up, and Norton supports it.

I only have IE as a back up. My suggestion would be to stick with Firefox. :smileyhappy:

I'd stay away from Chrome too, at least for now.

Firefox is my preferred browser as well.

Thanks for the reply!

My problem is...I've shut off some services that I think may affect the security of my IE browser. And since I was dumb enough not to write down my changes, Now I don't know which ones to turn back on...manual or auto...don't know.

bad move on my part.

my solution to my own ignorance was to uninstall the IE browser through the windows program that does that.

I'm using firefox and happy with it....but I feel a little uncomfortable about only having ONE browser on my machine.

I had IE 11 installed. I hear there's a compatibility problem...that it doesn't 'play nice' with Norton 360 sometimes.

Also...say...I were to reinstall it... What services would I need to turn back on to make sure it'd run the way it was supposed to?

Would they automatically set when I reinstalled it? What about the .net framework and all the stuff that goes with it in services?

I turned almost everything to manual except for norton lol

I went to Black Viper site and he had a list of what the settings should be for windows 7 sp 1 home premium. Should I follow those?

Appreciate the time and effort F4E and Dave! Thanks!

Paula :smileyhappy:

well decided to skip opera and chrome and checked all my settings again black viper's diagram and think it's all good...reinstalled IE 11. I think I'm good to go with a backup browser now.

Still prefer my firefox though! :smileywink:

footsie is out de do'

thanks! :smileyhappy:

Hi, Paula. Black Viper's site is as good a place as any for checking which Windows Services are needed, and which aren't.

Those you've set to Manual will start up, if required.

You can always download IE 10 from the Microsoft site, if you want to retain IE. Download the 32 bit version.
