Optimization Problem

Norton 360 is continually showing the following on my XP:

When I click on FIX, the following happens:

Norton have tried to fix this using the 'remote' help line without success, can anybody help please?

Tried manual operation with no success.  Have disabled 360 and disconnected from web, tried defrag with windows XP, no joy, will not even anaylise. Tried in safe mode, no joy.  Defrag screen appears but nothing happens.

I cannot understand why Norton help could not sort this out.

Can you try please the AutoFix tool:

1. Open 360

2. Click on Help & Support -> Get Support menu item

3. When it is loaded click on Begin Support Session, it will load the autofix tool

4. Let it run, and check if it fixed anything

5. When it's done, just simply cose the window with the X button.

Check whether the Defrag task(defrag.exe) is already running under the list of the processes in the Task Manager, and end that process. Then try to run the Disk Optimization from the Norton 360 program again. Also, check whether you have Defragmenter service in the list of services and make sure that it is started.

OK Tried the Autofix tool, see below which took me back to the main screen, full circle.  I had tried this before contacting Norton for help

Yogesh,

Tried your suggestions but again all appears to be OK, Defrag.exe is not running, Defragmenter is ticked in the required box in 360 settings

Please run a System File Check.  START > RUN > type cmd and press ENTER.  Type sfc /scannow and press ENTER.  You will need your original OS disk to supply the proper files should any need to be replaced.  Let us know what this finds.

Ok, did as you suggested and the following occured:  Should I then have put in a further command?

I tried it again and the system checked that all protected windows files were intact etc;  then it returned to the screen after I had typed in cmd.  It did not ask to do any tasks, just waiting for a further prompt.

I did try Norton again but still same problem.

You missed one character :).

You have to write sfc /scannow into the window, not sfc scannow.

Did you rebooted your system after the SFC scan?

If no, please try to run the disk optimization after a reboot.

Thanks.

Yes did a reboot - no joy.

If you start XP's built in defram application, does it work as it should? Or does it have any errors?

Tried that, the screen appears but the action buttons, analise, defrag etc are just not functioning, nothing happens. tried it in safe mode still nothing.  Someone suggested trying a third perty bit of defrag software, but that idea seems to me skirting around this problem,

Then there's something with your Windows installation....

Try to delete the defrag.exe (it's located in c:\Windows\system32\defrag.exe). After a little time windows' auto protection will replace it from the protected storage.

Then try to run it again.

Let us know the results.

Ok tried that, nothing, problem still remains.

Can you try to remove Norton 360 from your system with the Norton Removal Tool (www.norton.com/nrt).

Then download the latest version from www.norton.com/n360s_4, and reinstall it after using the removal tool.

Let us know the results.

You may have to perform a repair installation of Windows as this problem happens when the system files are damaged. You can find more instructions to perform a repair installation in this LINK.
