I really can't believe it. First I had the problem with Norton 360 that the Auto Shutdown wouldn't work during whole the subscription. I could not use this function and Symantec could not solve teh problem.
Now I have Norton Internet Security installed and I carried out an optimization under performance and the thunder began again. Everything went well until Norton in the background felt compelled to begin scanning probably triggered by inactivity. I thought why scanning in the background during optimize? In any case, the system fixed and according to Task Manager> Applications Norton did not work. In processes dfrgntfs remained constant at one hundred percent. I couldn't do anything and the optimizing beam/colon (vertical) in Norton moved no more. After one hour I pressed reset.
This is still pretty worthless and I hope that the system has suffered no damage. Can we no longer use any functions of a Norton product?
What the heck do I do? It is really too stupid for words that Norton is scanning in the background perhaps not possible when the system defrags and the result is my system crashes.
It seems more to me, that when I buy a Norton product, I get the problems for free!

I have no further problems. It is a bug/mistake of the Norton crue. When you do a defragmentation, you have to shut down automatic scanning in the background otherwise the system will crash. I have Windows XP Home Edition SP 3 32-bits, with 1 GB RAM DDR. Pentium 4 CPU 2,53 Hz Kloksnelheid 2,56 Ghz. The processor is using 100% and stays 100%. Why doesn't Symantec can't see this coming? Do they spend more time looking at Oprah of Dr. Phil?
When you look in NIS history do you see these two events overlapping? I'll do some testing on this on my system but Delphinium's question about whether you ran the NRT is still valid? Can you confirm that?
I don't normally use NIS optimizer because I have my own third party utility but I will do some testing on this and if I see a problem I will make sure Symantec is aware of it.

Why do I have to look in NIS history. I could see Norton doing a full systemscan in the right corner below and than the system freezes (timetable stops) and processes is 100% CPU.
Norton 360 has a uninstall and I used this while keeping the settings and everything was okay. I Installed NIS 2010 and upgraded to NIS 2011. There were no problems.
I do not want to use NRT because it removes all my other Norton programs. Ghost en Utilities and in Ghost I have to make all my profiles again. I believe the problem is that my processor and my memory can't do both jobs at the same time. Why scanning in the background during defragmentation???????????? That is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi The_Hulk,
Again, I said I will test this but the NRT is always recommended when switching software like this. I can't tell you how many problems I've seen in my time on the forums here by not following this golden rule.
Things can look like they've gone smoothly but there could be things hiding "beneath the covers" which could manifest themselves in strange ways.
I'm not saying that is the problem, I am saying it "could" be. If I am able to reproduce it then that will suffice to show that not using the NRT is not the problem, but otherwise......
No need to do any testing, Allen. This issue was brought to Symantec's attention, in June, during the NIS 2011 Beta testing (see below). The_Hulk may be better off using NIS 2010 until this problem with NIS 2011 is resolved.
Why do I not know that? What in hell is the function of Community Watch? Why did I not get a e-mail? Now you can see I spend over more than five hours and you already know the problem. Shame on you!
I disabled Community Watch because they don't do anything at all. I disabled automatic scanning in the background and did a optimize and it toke over 45 minutes and nothing went wrong.
until this problem with NIS 2011 is resolved.????
No thanks, because I know you don't solve problems. Next year Christmas the problem isn't solved. See my problem Auto Shutdown Norton 360. You didn't solve that problem either.
Just a reminder that, like you, I'm just a forum member, not a Symantec employee, whose Forum names appear in red.
The purpose of my last post was to let you know that Symantec had been made aware of this issue during the Beta testing phase of the NIS 2011 product. This was to ensure that you didn't waste your time using the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to try and fix a known issue with the product.
As for a permanent fix to this problem, perhaps Symantec themselves would care to comment on when this issue is likely to be addressed...
I have never difficult problems! But always when I ask questions at this forum, it seems to me that they don't want to understand the problems. If it takes hour after hour working to solve the problem it is no more fun. If I had done what you told me and used NRT than I had to install GHOST (with all profiles) and UTILITIES again and that will cost me over three hours and is has nothing to do with the problem! I disabled scanning in the background and the optimize did the job without craching.
I believe I is better to ask no more question on this forum because they don't know anything and my experience is in 99% of the cases the forum can't solve the problems. They ask more questions, you get more problems, don't understand Dutch, don't understand the problem etc. etc.
Why is there no Norton Forum in Dutch? Selling Norton Products in the Netherlands and no support, no forum!

NO, I said::
