Starting yesterday I have been getting an opening screen that says that my computer performance is at risk. Every computer I have Norton on appears as a big orange circle. Some of these computers have not been turned on in week and even months. There is a button to download a file "Download" but there's NO WAY I am going to download this file unless it is safe to do so. I am wondering if I am even on the real Norton web site.
I would not normally ask something like this but I suspect my main computer and my wife's may have gotten infected for several other reasons.
I keep Norton updated, it does the updates automatically, and I have run a full system scan from Norton, and tried the power eraser computer, which finds problems the regular scan didn't, but doesn't have any way to fix them.
My Norton won't even start now. I use the start menu or desktop icon to start and nothing happens. This started happening yesterday.
I have run Norton power eraser and when it finishes, it says that I have 11 issues, and the "Cancel" button is the only one usable. "Fix Now" button is disabled --????
There is a checkbox that says "Create System restore point before proceeding with fix (recommended)" and it is checked.
On my wife's computer Norton says that the infected file is Explorer.exe, in the Windows\Syswow64 folder. Of course power eraser won't offer to fix it. I tried unsuccessfully to rename it as a temporary measure, even though I know I shouldn't be able to.
Can someone enlighten me as to what is going on?
Is the orange screen a new screen that everybody gets when they first log in?
