Orange Taskbar Icon

I have NIS 2010 on a Win7 IE8 laptop.  It is switched off when I am away and on return I  see when Live Update was last run maybe days or a week previously so I always manually run Live Update after which all is fine.  The taskbar icon usually shows the green check (or tick) when I boot up although I have had a red cross a few times after a lengthy period away which catching up on the updates cures with no problem.  I returned from a few days away and today switched on as usual but this time the taskbar icon showed an orange exclamation mark and on bringing up the NIS window it was marked "Attention" and "Fix It".  It also told me that Live Update last operated 5 days ago. I clicked "Fix It" and  about 8 updates downloaded and a computer restart was indicated which I did.  After  restart exactly the same taskbar icon orange exclamation mark showed indicating that attention was required.  Again the NIS window showed "Attention" and "Fix It" which I thought I had already done.  Once again I clicked "Fix It" and this time a Quick Scan generated.  After that all seemed OK.  I have used NIS for years and never seen this before after such a short time away and I am curious as to what might have caused these unusual indications all of a sudden.

Thank you for your interest, huwyngr.

All is still well with NIS 2010 (green icon showing) and is version 17.8.0.5.

Hello imbart

This post @

has more info on why the orange\warning\attention icon comes up if a quick scan has not been done for a few days.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for that, N_sb_combatant.  I thought it must be connected with lack of use although I had not seen the "attention" warning  before even after disuse for more than 5 days and after the first "Fix It" I mentioned above on clicking which triggered the Live Updates and then required a restart I wondered if a new engine had been downloaded (should have checked it out at the time).  Although I haven't had it before it seems from the post you linked for me that it is not unknown.

Thanks for the good news.

You are entitiled to a free update to NIS 2011 for as long as you have subscription time available. If you want to take advantage of this we can give you a direct link to get the Upgrade, or you can click on the Support / New Version Check and that will download it.

Personally I prefer the one piece download that we can link you to since you then have a file to reuse if you need to.

Thanks again, huwyngr.   I was aware of that and I have two computers - a desktop and a laptop.  The desktop has NIS 2011 and is used regularly by me  but I obtained the laptop about 5 months ago mainly for the benefit of my wife for Skype purposes and it is not used regularly which explains NIS 2010 reacting to the lack of use.  My wife is not really computer literate yet  and I usually attend to general updates and configuration etc  on the laptop.  I  broached the subject of updating to NIS 2011 at the time I upraded to it on my desktop about a month or so ago but at the moment she prefers to keep NIS 2010 which she has got used to and which I installed when we first got it as one of the three allowed on the licence.  No doubt the time will come when she is more fully versed with the computer and we will then consider the upgrade.

I think the only time my wife notices that Norton Internet Security is on the computer we share is when it used to pop up messages about dreadful things being removed (always tracking cookies if you looked) and how clever we are to have done that! Then I'd get a Yell: What do I do .....

But 2011 doesn't seem to do that and is generally lighter fingered so I really would not hesitate, although if she uses Identity Safe you might want to check and see if any changes were made in 2011 since I don't use it and so don't encounter it.

Might be a good idea to wait until the revised 18.5 update is down again and proven, however .....

To be honest I have the same experiences with my wife - I actually got a computer for her to use so she wouldn't mess about with mine.  She knows about NIS because I showed it to her and explained a bit about manually using Live Update.  I have to confess that It was partly my influence that persuaded her that it wasn't such a good idea to upgrade from NIS 2010 because I had had a bad experience with NIS 2011 on my PC.  Like others I have occasionally  to use System Restore on my desktop WinXP SP3 IE7 which as you know requires Norton Tamper Protection to be disabled before it will work.  This was fine every time with NIS 2010 but when I did System Restore with NIS 2011 installed  it became corrupted- warnings, red cross etc"Fix It"  didn't  work neither did any advice from a Norton technician through Support/Help.  The only answer was to uninstall and reinstall NIS 2011 to cure it.  Anyway, as I mentioned she's happy with it...

Thanks for the help.

We -- the users -- cause more computer problems than malware does I bet, especially since much malware only gets on your computer when you "invite" it .....

I think your wife could enjoy her computer without knowing a thing about LiveUpdate! Just set it to Automatic and as long as she know to ask you if/when she gets a popup for example saying you need to restart your computer .....

I hope you didn't set her up to decide about Windows Updates <g>

You're right.  That is the situation in fact - she calls me.
