Outbound Traffic Monitoring

I like Norton Internet Security…especially its reboot option to clear out the bugs, trojans and viruses. The problem that I have with it, is that there doesn’t seem to be any OUTBOUND traffic monitoring communication control, where it alerts the user of a specific program app that wants to call outside somewheres…and the important option of giving it permission. Is there anyway of locating and enabling this option within NIS ???

Hi Ezysk,

You are not getting any prompts for Outbound traffic because of the Automatic Program Control function enabled in the Smart Firewall of Norton Internet Security by default. The Smart Firewall is having the capability to allow Internet access only if the files is recognized as a trusted one. You may need to disable the Automatic Program Control and enable the Advanced Event Monitoring option to get prompts from the firewall whenever each program tries to access the Internet. When you turn off Automatic Program control, you can turn on Advanced Events Monitoring. You can use the Advanced Events Monitoring options, to configure the Internet access settings for Internet-enabled programs the first time that they run.

When you turn on Advanced Events Monitoring feature, you are prompted with numerous firewall alerts. This Advanced Event Monitoring is recommended only for Advanced Users. This is because yoou may need to recognize each file which tries to access the Internet and then only you need to allow the access. Otherwise, there is a possiblity of allowing threats(unrecognized programs) to access Internet from your computer by accident, which will download several other threats in return.

Now just how do I locate and enable Advanced Event Monitoring in Norton Internet Security 2009 ?

1. Start NIS 2009.

2. In the Internet pane, click Settings.

3. Under Firewall, click Advanced Settings.

4. In the Advanced Settings window, click on the slider near Automatic Program Control to disable it.

5. Click the slider near Advanced Event Monitoring to enable it.

6. Configure the listed items under Advanced Event Monitoring however you want.

7. Click Apply > OK.
