Outlook 2010 very slow opening with NIS 2011 antispam plug-in active

This has been really annoying for months now and I haven't found a solution.  If I have the NIS 2011 antispam plug-in load in Outlook 2010 (32bit), opening Outlook hangs for minutes on loading the plug-in.  If I disable the plugin, it loads just fine, but then I don't have the protection that I bought.  This happens on two different computers with the same setups.

OS - Win7 Pro x64

Office 2010 32 bit

Any ideas how to get this to load quickly so I can use it?

Thanks,

 ...Rich

Hi Rich,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

This should work fine. What version of NIS do you have? You can find this from Support > About. Do you have any other security software installed besides NIS?

Has this problem been present all along or did it start sometime later? Did you have Office 2007 at first and then upgrade to Office 2010 or did you have 2010 to begin with?

When you say it works with Antispam plug-in disabled, can you clarify? In NIS Network Settings do you have Antispam disabled or Email AV Scan or both?

You can try turning off both Email Antivirus scan and Antispam and apply changes. Then also click on Client Integration and uncheck Outlook from both sections and apply changes.

Then turn everything back on and see if it functions properly.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Me Too!!!!

3.2 Ghx quadcore Intel

8 GB RAM

Win 7 64

Outlook 2010 32 bit

Just upgraded to Norton 360 5.0

The loading screen stalls at Norton Anti-spam plug-in for more than a minuter everytime. CPU load is low, HD load is low

A couple of times Outlook never finished loading just stalled there.

Same system Norton 360 Version 4.0.. no problem.

What's up with this "improvement"

NIS v18.5.0.125  No other security software installed.

I beleive that only Office 2010 has been on this laptop, but not positive that I didn't upgrade from 2007.

It didn't exist at first; it started after a while, but not sure of anything in particular that triggered it.  I disabled it for a while, then re-enabled it and it seemed OK for a while, now it have become intollerable again.

I disabled it using Outlook/File/Options/Add-ins/Manage COM Add-ins then unchecked "Norton Antispam Outlook Plugin"  Outlook loads fine when disabled this way.

I'll test your other suggestions and report back.

Tried the other procedures and now it loads reasonably fast again.  Still pauses a couple of seconds, but nothing like before.  I will keep monitoring to see if it get worse again and report back.

Hi Rich,

Thanks very much for the update. I'll be looking forward to reading how things goes. Hopefully it will work well for you.

Best wishes.

No go for me:

Turned off the Anti-Vir and Anti-Spam

Even restarted the machine.

I can turn on Anti-Vir and even anti-spam all is fine

But as soon as I turn on integration with Outlook

WHAMMM  It stalls at Norton AntiSpam Plugin 6 of 12.. or more than a minute everytime no difference between first run after boot or 3rd run etc.

Really disapointed in this.

Without the Norton my outlook loads so fast I never see the other 11 plug in names..

Just to head off the blame game.. I turned off all but 3 other add-ins.. Hotmail, Exchange and one other for basic usage..

Still now stalls at Norton ....2 of 4 over one minutes

Again this is 2.8-3.4 GHz quadcore wiht 8 gigs of ram

Outlook 2010 fully updated 32 bit

Win 7 64 SP1 fully updated

Norton 360 5.0 is the only security software I have loaded.

Any new Ideas? Thanks

ONE MORE interesting piece of info.... which suggests this is a silly UI bug.

IF I turn on the spash screen again for the outllook Plug-in... Outlook loads VERY fast... and starts checking email accounts etc.

BUT the splash screen can't be closed for a long time.. .. So maybe some kind of silly delay to make me read the splash screen has a bug that stalls out the plug-in when the screen is off..

Hi fogfire,

Welcome to the Norton Community.

I assume by Splash screen, you are referring to "Welcome Screen" in Network Settings correct?

With Outlook 2007 I do not see any delay with roughly the same number of plugins you have. Also, when I do enable the Welcome Screen option I am able to close it immediately upon launch of Outlook.

With the Welcome screen on or off I do not see any delay with Outlook 2007.

I can make a couple of enquiries concerning Outlook 2010 and get back to you. I have not yet had time to upgrade my Office suite.

Best wishes.

Allen

No.. it is the "Wecome screen" that pops up the first time you load the Anti-Spam Plug-in when starting Outlook 2010.

It has a check box that is always checked by default for "don't show next time" so to turn it back on for one more time you have to go into the antispm client integrations setting.

IF this is on, Outlook loads fast but the screen buttons and close box on the Welcome screen are locked out for a long time.  If it is off the entrie plug-in stalls the loading of Outlook 2010.

Hi fogfire,

This is the Welcome screen that is controlled by the option I mentioned in Network Settings. If you uncheck the box and then go into Network Settings you will find that the Welcome Screen option automatically gets turned OFF.

Please see image below. If this is not the Welcome screen you are seeing then please attach an image to your next post by taking a screen shot and then click the  symbol at the top of the reply editor to attach to your post.

Again I don't see this problem with Outlook 2007 so I can make enquries through other channels and see if anyone else has seen this with Outlook 2010.

Best wishes.

Allen

Yes that is the screen

If I turn it off.  Outlook 2010 stalls out for over a minute at the Outlook Welcome Screen that lists the add-ins as they load.  It stalls at the loading of the Norton Anti-Spam plug in.

If I turn it on.in settings. Outlook loads very quickly and starts checking my accounts (1 exchange and about 6 IMAP based accounts)  BUT the this Welcome screen will not accept input to close it for simular long delay.

BTW my internet connection is hardwired 25/25mbps FIOS

For now I have disabled Anti-Spam Client Integration with Ouotlook.. and I am someone that tags the new SPAM so you get new info from me all the time when it is working.

Do we have an answer for this UNNACEPTABE DELAY?

It happens on two machines

Both win 7 64bit

One exchange and 2-4 IMAP accounts.

Hi Fogfire,

Somehow I missed your previous response.

I know you don't want to hear this so apologies in advance, but Norton does not support Exchange or IMAP. It supports POP3 and SMTP using the standard ports 25 & 110.

If you have no POP3 or SMTP email accounts I would suggest leaving Antispam disabled.

Best wishes.

Hi.. I have a mix of accounts.. but the load time is SOOOO SLOOOWWW I can't use this for any of them...

This is a BUG when will it be fixed.  I was a software tester for a large software company for over 3 years.. I know a bug when I see it.  I was also support for 7 years and I know a "blow off" answer when I see one.

Sorry but this delay on loading should not be happening.

I am waiting for a fix, not an excuse.

fogfire

I'm not experiencing the same slowness on my system.

I'm glad your experience has equipped you to identify general problems from specific responses.

Your continued participation heree should be an asset

Hi kerlshamhk,

I understand your frustration, but just so you know I am not from Symantec. You mentioned having Exchange and IMAP accounts and I simply responded that these account types are not supported.

While I agree that having Antispam enabled should not cause a problem, neither will it help you if you do not have any supported email account types.

Best wishes.

Allen

Problem keeps recurring.  I finally just disabled it and will wait to see if Symantec fixes the problem in the next version.  Too bad, I liked the feature when it worked without a problem in previous  versions.
