Hey, A week ago I installed Office 2010 x64 but the problem is that Norton Antispam is not Compability with the new Outlook and also 64 bit.

I knew this will happen but I was wondering the ETA or just to notifiy the problem that you guys should work on with a patch or the new beta.

Office 64 bits is much better than 32, I am sure that some problems soon will be solved but sounds like symantec found a excuse just to don't work to fix....too bad I'he just bought a new license of norton 360.

Hopefully

Hi aalvico

Microsoft themselves recommends the use of the 32 bit Version of Office rather than the 64 bit Version for most users.

Hi aalvico

Just an added note to all this. Everyone knew that 64 bit OS was the wave of the future but the timing took a lot of companies by surprise. I don't think many companies expected it to happen quite this soon, so the end result is that a lot of companies are simply not writing native 64 bit applications yet.

Most companies writing plug-ins for MS Office are still writing in 32 bit, hence Microsoft's recommendation to continue with 32 bit Office for the time being.

However, now that Microsoft has officially announced that Windows 7 will be the LAST 32 bit OS most software companies will get on board and start writing native 64 bit applications in earnest.

By the time that Windows 7 successor is released, this kind of problem will not exist any more.

I also feel your pain. Although most companies did not plan 64 bit to be fast adoption but I call these companies just stupid since it was coming.

Anyway, You have two choices you can side with Symantec and listen to them by using 32 bit which even Microsoft Recommends or dump them and get a refund. Since you just got it I recommend you get a refund and try to find a company that does support 64 bit or think more about it.

I think we are the users and if there is a company out there already with 64 bit then they have advantage over Symantec and I will jump ship and use them since 64 bit is very important to me.

That last thing is that you can use the product but be careful with email and maybe the outlook's own filter will do. I am stuck midway in my subscribtion and that is what I am doing. I use the Security but not the Antispam portion. Its not my fault that Norton does not support it, I still blame Symantec about this.

If anyone has product recommendation then post away.

Hi maxknux,

I am a software engineer myself so I totally understand where you are coming from. But Symantec is not even close to the only one that does not have native 64 bit.

Bear in mind that Microsoft themselves recommend 32 bit Office and that is NOT because of Symantec. They do it because the vast majority of 3rd party plug-ins for things like WORD are still written in 32 bit.

Security software like Norton is only a piece of the problem, what about all the other plug-ins?

My two cents worth. :smileywink:

Allen

Your right Allen,

LoL, seconds before you posted I even posted a idea about plug-ins: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Product-Ideas/Adobe-Flash-Protection-Files/idi-p/261885

And I already mention and I understand Microsoft's Recommendation but its up to the user to follow through.

Yeah, I understand its unreasonable and I am no expert in Computer Software but these are my concerns.

I used both 32- and 64-bit versions of Office 2010 during the beta test at Microsoft, and I can say that there's simply no difference between the two, except the extra 64-bit things what we average home user will never use (eg. the very big excel files, or the extra RAM (2GB+) for Excel / Project.

During my tests I found both 32- and 64-bit starts the same time, maybe 32-bit a bit slower, but we are talking about less then 1 sec difference (and my hardware is not a hard core one, it's an AMD M300 2,0GHz Dual Core proc., 3GB RAM, 512MB ATI Radeon HD4530).

So if you do not use those extra features that 64-bit would give you, than it is much more easier to use the 32-bit one. And you will have no compatibility issues as well.

Check this MS site for advantages and disadvantages of using Office 2010 x64: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681792(office.14).aspx

So do I used both. And files bigger than 100 MB run much better at 64 bits...so since Excel and Project are the software that are the most important for me, I decided to change.

I agree that most users, by now, cannot have any extra benefit using 64 bits, but that must be their option.

And even for the ones that don´t need it now, should consider who are ready to run or at least getting ready.

What Symantec just forgot is: .We pay every year to use it (So we are paying to keep it always updated).

Anyway..If Symantec cannot go ahead I can..Just starting to test a new Antispam Software.

I checked some other AV product's home page, McAffe, AVG, Avast! and Panda has no compatible plugin, only on the Kaspersky site could I found that it has some kind of an Outlook 2010 compatible plugin.

But I think Symantec will start to develop a compatible plugin soon, but we have no info about it at the moment.

EDIT: By the way, messages will be still analized and marked as spam, like in the not compatible email clients, only the toolbar and the auto-sorting mechanism is missing in Oultook 2010 x64!

Hello Voyager10,

We are compatibile as far as Scanning and AntiSpam Filtering is concerned. However, the Norton AntiSpam toolbar is not compatibile, and a manual filter will need to be setup to move all messages tagged with [Norton AntiSpam] to the Junk Mail folder.

Did NIS2012 support outlook x64 Support ?
