I am getting ready to download and install Norton parental controls (part of NIS 2009) on my laptop for my kids to use while on the internet. I was wondering if I download and install it and then don’t want to keep it, can I uninstall it by itself ,or do i have to uninstall NIS 2009 altogether? I also noticed that On my Windows Vista I can set up Parental controls. My question for anybody that has used them,Which one would be better? Nortons Parental controls or Windows Vista’s?
You can uninstall only the Norton Add-On Pack of course, no need tho remove NIS. But I think it’s enough if you just turn those features off.
Have you seen this from Symantec

I don't use this one myself but I heard some great things about it. You should try it
I use another product which has been very good,But Norton has got me curious!
Thought I had better point out that it is still in beta http://community.norton.com/t5/Ask-Marian/Norton-Online-Family-Beta-Now-Available-Free-and-Helping/ba-p/66449#A257
Hi TooStrong,
I think, Norton Parental Control is more advanced when compared to the Windows Vista Parental Control. Better try both and decide whichever you finds as comfortable and effective. You can find more information on the following links:

Hi Kayza,
OnlineFamily.Norton is a newer, and by most accounts, superior parental control program from Symantec. There is an enlightening review of the product at PC Mag. Also, there is an extensive OnlineFamily.Norton support site here. If you still prefer the old Norton Parental Controls, you can install the latest Add On Pack, Version 4, for NIS 2010 from here.
Good Day All,
1. Do I have to uninstall the parental control from 'online.family.norton.com' first?
2. If I install the Add-on pack V4, if I don't like it, can I uninstall and use the parental control that I downloaded from
'online.family.norton.com'?
Thanks to all in advance
Zaboo
Do I have to uninstall the parental control from 'online.family.norton.com' first?
Answer: Yes. You have to uninstall the Add-on Pack to install Online family Safety. Two conflicting parental controls can't work together performing the same action, even though it is from the same manufacturer.

Answer: Yes. You can. For further questions on Online family safety, I would recommend posting to that board.

Hi,
you have two options for Parental Controls:
1. Using the Norton Add-On Pack available for Norton 360 4.0, it is available here.
2. Or using the https://onlinefamily.norton.com service, which is much more configurable, and with that you can do the time set-ups as well. I would recommend using this.
You have these options for setting times:
Hi,
I too get the same message. However my 16 yr old discovered that there is a glitch enabling him to disable the safety minder which then results in the above message. (it has taken us a long time to discover how, or why!)
What happens is this: When the countdown timer comes on, he then logs off before it gets to 0. The computer then gives an error asking to 'end program'. He then ignores this, resulting in the computer not logging off, and thereby disabling the Safety Minder.
As Above: this also seems to only happen on our older computer: possibly overloading the cpu at the time. The older computer is running Windows XP and uses Internet Explorer 6. He is unable to do this on the laptop which runs on Vista and uses Google Chrome for the internet.
11/4/10 3:49 PM : Norton Safety Minder is not running. This could be caused by a problem with the program, or else a user might have shut down a Norton Safety Minder component. Please restart the computer. [PC]
My Online Family Protection is set and is on. I am receiving emails that it has been turned off. When I check it is on. What is going on?
Hi ramden5,
Thanks for the information. Could you download the latest Norton Safety Minder from the Norton Online Family website to the older computer to see if it helps. We have added more features to help prevent tamper to the system. The latest version is 2.1.0.37.
Thanks,
Katie
Hi Katie,
I did that about a month ago and have just confirmed that it is the latest version. My son only discovered the glitch AFTER I downloaded the latest version. He never tried it on the old one so I don't know if it had the same glitch or not.
Cheers,
Megan
ramden5,
Thanks for the update. We just posted the update very recently. Please let us know if the issue helps again.
Thanks,
Katie
Hi!
This is a bug!
We are using the latest version, 2.1.0.37. My daughter does exactly what’s ramden5 described here, and effectively disabling safety minder. I have reported this in an earlier post, but haven’t figured it out before yesterday how my kids could bypass safety minder. Like it is today, it is a worthless tool...
Regards,
Ole Martin
Hi Olex,
Please only give the child’s user account non-administrator rights(restricted or limited). Please also keep the password for your Norton Online Family away from her. Otherwise, a monitored child is able to tamper the system.
We would be more than happy to setup a remote desktop access and work together with you on this. You're welcome to send me a private message or an email for details. You can find my email address at http://community.norton.com/norton/profile?user.id=15038
Thanks
Katie
Hi,
My kids DEFINITELY only have limited accounts: this is a bug in the safety minder program.
I would be happy to do remote connection.
Ramden5
Hi Katie!
I reported this 9.9.2010 in this forum, link: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Online-Family/One-of-my-kids-is-disabling-Norton-Online-monitoring-and-I-don-t/m-p/286918#M5775
The answer that time is the same as now:
She is using her STANDARD account with non-administrator rights. I have also changed my administrator password and the password to my Norton online family account as well. No way that she can log on to my admin account or Norton online family account!
I don’t know if a remote session will work here. The bug is when the kids do the “log of trick” as ramden5 described: “When the countdown timer comes on, he then logs off before it gets to 0. The computer then gives an error asking to 'end program'. He then ignores this, resulting in the computer not logging off, and thereby disabling the Safety Minder.”
At that stage, no remote connection will be available and thus there is nothing to see.
But, anyway, you are welcome to take a lock!
Thanks and regards,
Ole Martin
