Recovered! Yay!!!
I grabbed a free utility called TestDisk which could properly see that there were still two partitions and after a couple of simple selections it 'recreated the Partition Table' on the disk. I then rebooted and most of my images/folders were working. Some folders became inaccessible and some images that were previously ok became unopenable. I ran CHKDSK again and 99% of those were fixed. I've checked about 100 images in different folders and have found about 5 so far that are partly corrupted and unusable, but most of those I'll have backed up already...
