I reedited my post after I found the log file information. Every time it asked for the CD, sfc was correcting a corrupted file. The log file shows what files were copied / repaired. See if rebooting now will keep the system stable.

Problem seems to be solved!
By chance I disconnected my wireless booster antenna and the problem dissapeared
No idea why cos I've just attached the booster antenna to my router and a standard aerial to the wireless card on the PC and all seems to be fine

Placement of those antenna can be tricky. Glad things worked for you. Come back if you need anything else.
Well, go figure that one! There is no accounting for hardware conflicts, and Windows is only minimally useful. It would be a good idea to push your own green button for the solution in case some other poor soul has the same problem, and a booster.
