I have a Toshiba laptop running XP professional (yes, it still works fine). I installed Norton Internet security a couple of years ago and it ran fine. Then the problem started: When the the Full Scan runs, it runs for about 1/2 hour then the PC shuts down. Every time. I thought it might be a problem with Norton Internet Security and uninstalled it and purchased and installed Norton 360. I'm having the same problem. My work around is that I put the PC into sleep mode every so often. This discontinues the security scan.
Any help regarding why the PC would shut down during the full scan? I ran Malwarebytes but it ran fine and found no problems. I have also run CC Cleaner to clean out old files and registry junk, but still having the problem.
Thanks
Hi,
can you please tell us the exact version of your Norton product?
1. Open the main window
2. Click on Help & Support -> About menu
3. On the About window find the version number (it will look like this: 5.1.0.29)
Thanks!
That is my exact version: 5.1.0.29.
I have been researching on other sites regarding PC shut down and see similar problems fixed by replacing a video card or sound card and also where the heat sensor is the problem. I notice on my PC that the fan starts running at high speed when the virus scan runs. I'm wondering if maybe there is a heat related problem??
Thanks for help with this.
Can you please tell us how did you installed the new product? Did you just installed over the old one?
Try these steps:
- Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
- Double-click Norton icon in the desktop to start full system scan.
Let us know if it completes without any problem.
Yogesh
Actually it could just be that in the scan window you have the shutdown upon completion check box checked. You should check that.
