PC will not shut down since installing 360 V4

I am having problems with 360 V4.3.0.5. With 360 loaded my Toshiba Netbook will not shut down. This problem only exists if i have 360 loaded. I have removed 360 from the machine and it returns to normal. I have left the machine sitting for hours in the hope that at some point it is going to turn off but it sits with the Shutting down message and will not switch off. Any suggestions as to what i can do? Thanks....

Just a few more questions if I may ask.

What security software did you have prior to Norton? How was it uninstalled?

Do you have any other security software currently installed?

Are there any messages in the Action Center or in Event Viewer that correspond to the times when the shutdown hangs?

Is this the Standard version of N360 or the Netbook Edition?

Thanks.

What security software did you have prior to Norton? How was it uninstalled?

I used the Norton removal tool.

Norton Antivirus that came with the new netbook as a trial. I decided to upgrade to 360 when the trial period finished as I am using 360 on all the other PC's in the house (we have 5)

Do you have any other security software currently installed?

No

Are there any messages in the Action Center or in Event Viewer that correspond to the times when the shutdown hangs?

Error with Nero 8. This has been uninstalled. The problem persists.

Is this the Standard version of N360 or the Netbook Edition?

Standard version. I did not know a netbook version existed.

The Norton Removal Tool leaves a few files behind in case the user wishes to reinstall a Norton Product.  There is a possibility this is causing the issue, so I would suggest a full uninstall / re-install.

Although some of these procedures may seem redundant, please execute each step.

  • Follow the instructions specific to N360 to Download and Save the Norton Removal Tool   to your desktop.

  • Run BUdump.exe.  (from the previous instructions).

  • Download and Save Norton 360v4 Standard to your desktop.

  • If you have N360v4 Premiere with 25 GB online storage, download from here .

  • Be sure your Local Backups are stored on external media or uploaded to Online Storage to ensure they remain intact.

  • For temporary protection, turn on your Windows Firewall.

  • Back up your Identity Safe Data to a convenient location. Have your product key handy.

  • Be sure to jot down any passwords used with 360 (Backup and Identity Safe).

  • Uninstall your current Norton Version via Add-Remove Programs or Programs and Features.

  • If prompted, do not select the option to save your settings.  Select "Please remove all user data...." (see image here)

  • Restart your computer when prompted.

  • After the restart, run the Norton Removal Tool.

  • Restart your computer when prompted.

  • Right click on the N360 Installer and select “Run As Administrator” (XP users just double click).

  • If prompted, enter your product key and set up your Norton account.

  • Check that Norton has turned OFF the Windows Firewall.

  • Run Live Update a few times until no more definitions are available.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for that. Will try in the next couple of days. Have to travel and will not be back before the weekend. Will update when done.

Ok the problem is now fixed. Unfortuneately i did not get the chance to follow your instructions. My netbook decided that it was unhappy and stopped working. I had to go into safe mode to restore to an earlier date but it also bumped out of that and started the repair service. When it was done all has worked fine ever since. I'm happy that all is working now. I sort of feel it is a shame that we could not work through what the problem was.

Phil thank you for the time spent is appreciated.

Well, I'm glad you got the problem resolved by whatever means.  So, Norton 360 is functioning well?

By the way, Norton 360 version 5 has been released to the public.  With an active subscription, all of your machines are eligible to update to the new version free of charge.

See this announcement and instructions from Tony Weiss.

(I beta tested this version - it is stable and ready to go!)

Best Wishes!

I am having the same problem since updating from V4 to V5.

Hello mel188881 and welcome to you!

Could you tell us how you updated to version 5.  Did you install version 5 "overtop" of your current version?
