PDF file email attachment vulnerability

My wife recently received an unusual email with a PDF attachment from a close friend's email account.  I advised her to NOT open the attachment without calling her friend first.  The friend said they did not send the email, so we advised that their email account had been compromised and is sending bogus emails to everyone on their contact list (which I wound up getting the same email later that day).  The subject line said, "Action Required: Docu Sign File: Wealth Management..." with the body of the email asking, "Please kindly view the attached PDF file, I could use a fresh opinion" along with email account owner's contact signature information on the bottom.

So the question, is there a way to pre-scan any/all email attachment types before downloading or opening the file?  Just want to stay safe.  I'm using Gmail through Microsoft Outlook.
