Can you download anything else?  Which version of Norton?

Norton Internet Security latest version

Sometimes problems with word documents...

Have you run liveupdate (run it until there are no more updates).

The current version is 2008.  I don't run Vista nor do I use gmail.  Can you forward the gmail to yourself at another address and then download the mail?

thanks.

can't forward the email.

has anyone else had such problems?

Well, you could try to use firefox as a browser in place of IE7.  I have heard of problems trying to use IE, even to the point that Microsoft was recommending using Firefox.  I don't use IE either.

Since you said that it is a new computer… I’ll ask an easy one… You do have Adobe Reader installed correct?   Adobe Reader may not come pre-installed on a new PC.  Also if it is installed open it, and Check for Updates until it tell you that you have the current version.

Adobe installed and fully uptodate

Do me a favor and check your NIS 2008 version.

Open the main Norton Control Panel.  Go to "Help and Support" (upper right corner), then click "About", then choose the Norton Internet Security Tab. The version number is at the top and the most current is: 15.5.0.23.

One other question: Are you operating Vista Service Pack 1? Was it installed when you purchased the computer or did the SP 1 update arrive later via Windows Updates?

NORTON version 15.0.0.60

Yes to the updates

Updates arrived later SP1

Thanks

Okay, you are running an older version of NIS and sometimes when Vista SP1 is installed AFTER Norton, it causes problems.

I would suggest the following:

1) Find and record your Norton activation key. Repeat: RECORD your ACTIVATION KEY.

2) Download the newest version of NIS here and save it to your desktop - do not open it yet.

3) Download and run the Norton Removal Tool here.

4) Restart your computer then install the Newest version of NIS 2008 which you saved to your desktop.

At some point here you will be asked to enter your activation key.

5) Once NIS is installed, run Manual Live Update a few times until there are no more updates left.

Before following the Steps, please create a Norton Account if not already done so as this will store all your Norton Products' information.  (www.mynortonaccount.com

Step 04: Just to let you know that, after the N.R.T. has finished un-installing your Norton Products, you will get a prompt to re-start you computer.  Once it has booted up, you will get a Web Page letting you install your Norton Security Product again, so, Step 02 you do not need to do.  Saying that, if you do do Step 02, you will be able to re-install without being Connected to the Internet which is why Phil_D has suggested this Step [02].

PMJI late.

After you have done the update to the current version of NIS as suggested, if the situation is unchanged, and if I understand correctly that it applies to emails where the PDF file is an attachment, try turning OFF the setting to check email as it arrives.

If that gets round the situation then it may be caused by Norton having a problem checking inside the PDF file to see if it is malware -- that it can take a very long time. I think I've come across this in messages here but not sure on which version of what!

If it does relate to that then we can ask one of the Norton Staff to jump in and say whether this is a known bug and so on or whether there is another way of dealing with it.

Turning off the checking by Norton during email download does not in fact leave you totally exposed since it will still check the file if you go to look at it or do anything else with it.

Hope that helps.
