When browsing, I have delayed web page loading along with impacts on gmail with delays. Many times a blue circle appears next to the cursor on some of these web pages I think indicating it is waiting for web pages to load. Sometimes, the web page doesn't fully load for more than 30 seconds or more before I get frustrated and close the page. Gmail, there are delays in deleting email that was not an issue prior to Norton. Any help would be appreciated as I moved from Kaspersky to Norton and did not have these performance issues with Kaspersky. Thanks in advance.
Spcs:
HP Spectre, Win 10, Norton Security w/Bup, Ver 22.11.0.41.
You're most welcome. If you feel you have a solution please mark the appropriate post as the solution, others may then see the solution. Happy holidays.
Update, I did turn off fast start which automatically unchecked or shut off hibernate and then closed all windows and then shut the laptop. I waited a full minute and then opened the lid, logged in and started google and then gmail. There was very little wait time as compared to when fast start was engaged.
I then restarted the computer and performed the same test. The wait time was minimal just like when I closed the lid.
As you indicated, there is a correlation between the delay and the fast start feature. I will leave it off as I did not see any real difference in starting time with the fast start feature on or off and hope that either Microsoft or Norton resolves the issue, either one would be fine.
I want to thank SoulAsylum for the suggestion to turn off the fast start feature.
Appreciate the loyalty to the product and while your point about other software having issues with the fast start feature of Windows, I have only experienced the issue with Norton but it may be too early to through Norton or Windows under the bus as I have not tested shutting down the fast start feature and then seeing the results.
I will post the results after I shut the feature off.
The Windows Fast startup feature causes problems with lots of software, not just Norton. It affects any software that needs to update running system files, a complete shutdown has to be done. This is not accomplished when you use the Shutdown setting with Fast Startup enabled. So it is not a problem with Norton code, but the way Windows handles updating running system files.
I will check the items you suggest but both of these actions, sleep or hibernate and fast start are features of the Windows 10 operating system I am using and which Norton indicates it is compatible. I personally like these two features as it improves the overall user experience. if either of these two features are creating the slow down on internet access, I would look to Norton to fix their code to be compatible with these two features which I am sure others find as popular as well.
Let me check and I will report back the findings. Appreciate your response and knowledge as well as your willingness to assist.
To find which of the Norton programs is actually impacting my internet loading immediately upon waking up, I disabled the Norton Firewall for 15 minutes, closed the browser (Google Chrome) and then closed the cover on my laptop. Waited ten minutes as I disabled the firewall for 15 min and then I opened the cover. It woke up, I signed in and could immediately get to the internet
Two things come to mind with that scenario if I may. Since you are closing the screen/lid of your laptop it appears you are hibernating or sleeping the laptop vice shutting it down. That in itself causes issues. Try a full shutdown and recheck.
Just FYI for anyone following this thread. It woke up, I signed in and could immediately get to the internet. The firewall still showed as disabled so while this is not a perfect scenario, it is good enough for me to say that it appears the firewall is the product delaying my browsing experience.
I will now dig deeper into the firewall to see if there is a setting that may be causing the slowdown as I have not customized it at all to this point.
Thanks SoulAsylum for asking but the problem remains and I have chosen to work with the impacts as it only occurs when the laptop comes out of sleep or hibernate. I see the computer connects with WiFI but cannot get to the internet for 30 seconds or so. I just wait a bit instead of expecting instant access.
I had 22.11.0.41 until I ran live update. It is now at 22.11.2.7 which must have come out today. I now have the latest and will see the impacts and will go onto Norton to determine what the update corrects.
I have completed the actions above. I had to run the uninstall reinstall twice as there was an issue but it appears it has now successfully reinstalled and all updates applied.
I do not see much of a difference if at all. When I delete an email from Gmail, there is a slight delay that wasn't there previously. I haven't done much surfing after this so the jury is till out on whether or not this fixes the issue. I will provide another update in a day or so after I have some time to see if your suggestion worked.
Thanks for the quick response. I did run the Kaspersky removal tool after I installed Norton and removed Kaspersky using the uninstall in Win. However, I have not uninstalled Norton and do another clean install as of yet. It might have some issues related to Kaspersky remnants. I will do that later and provide more feedback.
Did you fully remove your Kaspersky using their removal utility before you installed Norton? If not, there could still be some remnants that are conflicting with Norton and causing this strange behavior.
Start by running that tool, then restart your computer. Then I would suggest getting a fresh install of your Norton product, in case the Kaspersky remnants might have affected your Norton install. Use the Norton Removal and Reinstall tool for this. www.norton.com/nrnr Be sure you read the Before you begin section, and run LiveUpdate manually a few times, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.
