Too much to explain so look for a Private Message -- the

Hi Hugh,
Thanks for your advice, your first link did'nt work (page not found).
I downloaded Delphi's avast and mcafee removal tools ran both and restarted PC, still real slow.
Tried to use Norton uninstall and reinstall tool which had an "unrecoverable error and Norton should be removed manually" strangely enough I was suprised by that.
So I'm going manual see you on the other side hopefully.
Matt
Matt,
Not sure which you mean by "First link" -- can you give the message number?
<< Tried to use Norton uninstall and reinstall tool which had an "unrecoverable error and Norton should be removed manually" strangely enough I was suprised by that. >>
I had that on my XP system when I tried to use the NRnR Tool to go from 2011 to 2012 .... I'll flag this for Norton to check out.
You may have given this before but could you give the answers to my boilerplate on your system: Then it's all in one place on this page.
What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.
If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.
Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...
Thanks.
Hi Hugh,
I'm feeling a little hot under the collar, tried Norton remove tool second time went to downloading, did so for 3 hrs.
The told me failed please remove norton manually. I then it told me I could participate in online customer feedback, where I hoped I could let Symantec know how much I hate, hate, hate Norton. All it said was name and e-mail adress and the "thankyou for participating in the norton survey" - I now look foward to spam in my inbox selling me viagra.
Yesterday I received three fraudulent phone calls from "EIT Technologies" roughly hourly
Cyber Criminals = 4
Norton 360 all in one security = 0
Hugh please don't take this as me attacking you, you've been more than patient with me and I appreciate your help. I'm completely upset with this knocked up in a shed program called Norton.
I'll answer your questions in private as who knows whats beening evesdropped on my Pc while Norton is struggling.
Thanks
Matt
Hi Hugh and the rest of the community
Not sure what service pack I'm running but I have windows update on and I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit (please tell me how and I'll check).
Internet Explorer 8 - Norton live chat doesn't work even with a download it gave.
Running on a Pentium 2200 dual core with 4 gigs of ram 500GB harddrive 140GB used 6% fragmented, I'll try defrag tonight.
Product Name: Norton 360
- Version: 4.3.0.5 updating to newer versions fails.
Just checking my windows update log and their are numerous failures on items regarding windows 7 security.
Example:
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (*******)
Installation date: 2011/07/31 11:28 PM
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070020
Update type: Recommended
This is a reliability update. This update resolves some performance and reliability issues in Windows. By applying this update, you can achieve better performance and responsiveness in various scenarios. For more information please see the Knowledge Base article. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
More information:
If you continue to receive error 80070020 after restarting your computer and running Windows Update, the interfering program, such as an antivirus program, might be running automatically when you first start your computer
I'll try turning off auto protect, then the other solution, could very possibly be my problem. I would be highly upset if I've going around thinking I'm protected by Norton for 170 days (6 months) lets face it Norton was happy to take my money, but no more.
Ok, turning off auto protect and firewall, did wonders for my startup performance 30 seconds compared to the 15minutes usually. however microsoft updates didn't update at restart. when I turned auto protect on again computer performance dipped as the harddrive started working hard for around 10 minutes.
Is their a tool to just get rid of Norton altogether?
Thanks for the help,
Matt
hi hugh,
the link that did'nt work was in message 15 and is the following:
Thanks again,
Matt
Tried the following thread on slow boot ups with Norton...
No difference, this long start up is killing me. all solutions reqiure reboot and all reboots take forever, unless norton is turned off.
Matt
Hi Matt,
Sorry not to get back sooner -- been out up until now..
I PM'd you on Service Packe -- WINKEY + Pause. Please let us know.
I'm somewhat confused as to where we are at present:
Do you have N 360 V5 installed and working OK?
Is your concern the slow startup?
I thought you had already used the Norton Removal Tool after the earlier installations got messed up. If so and you saved it you can run it a couple of times with a reboot inbetween and then try installing N360 V5 again -- I hope you saved the download.
Hi Hugh,
Thanks, after a second download roughly 1 hr this time I got Norton version 5. This was achieved by uninstalling Norton with the removal only tool, reloading V4 and the upgrading to V5 latest. I also managed to get through to customer service after two weeks.
Windows key and pause brings up system properties which just says windows 7 and my windows performance index.
Slow start up is my secondary problem, when "micrsosoft/Eit technologies" phoned me with my details, they told me my PC had been starting slowly for around 2 weeks (about a month now). This was true, I assumed Norton had let eavsdropping occur on my machine. Seemed very convient that two weeks after I started having problems they phoned me and new how long it had been happening for.
However on inspection of my windows 7 operating system I discovered that many of my windows updates had failed, this updates related to security and performance, the error as stated above was possibly as a result of a conflict with a antivirus program. Having removed all other antiviruses from my PC, I assume it's Norton.
Machine still sluggish after full system scan, updating rebooting becomes an endless cycle, to ensure the latest updates. still roughly 15 minutes startup time.
Thanks,
Matt
Matt,
If you can please forget about that contact saying your PC was running slowly -- that's a complete scam and nothing to do with Norton.
If your System Informaation does not include that Service Pack 1 line that I point to in this illustration:
then you do not have Service Pack 1 properly installed and that could be why you are not getting other updates installed properly -- some of the error messages you are getting could relate to the failure of the SP1 installation and others could come from needing prior updates before a more recent one will install ....
Do you have an IT department at the university that can help you resolve this -- although it might be possible for us to take you through the steps from what you said about being tied by your location to a very slow dial up internet connection this could take too long on line to be acceptable.
If you have they may have the whole Service Pack 1 file that exists for IT Departments which contains the updates for every possible variation of computer system which is a very large download that some of us with more than one PC do if we have a fast broadband connection. ALthough the OnLine installation only downloads the files that your particular computer needs it can take a long time on a slow connection and could be misled by partial installation which you seem to have.
Think about this while I see if I can get some of my more skilled colleagues involved.
Thanks Hugh,
No mine doesn't have the service pack 1... as you so kindly illustrated.
The failed updates say something is interfering with updates at reboot.
I have a friend in the IT business, so I'll give it to him. My connection downloaded Norton V5 in 1hr (178mb).
Thanks,
Matt
That's best I think. Maybe he has a faster internet connection too?
Did you save the file/files you downloaded to install V5? If so you can re-use them if your friend decides the best thing is to clean up again, get Windows updated and then install Norton 360 GOLD which is the version you have.
When you downloaded V5 earlier you did use the link to the specific Downlod N 360 GOLD document that was posted earlier (and did not work for some so I'll repeat it here as a link)
Since that document was updated recently I assume it leads to V5. Unfortunately for many of us it is a Download Manager but it does save the files you need to install it again; I think it puts a link on the desktop, maybe called Norton Installation FIles. So you could go direct to those to reinstall Norton if you need to -- and if your friend were to do a complete reinstallation of Windows he could save those onto a thumbdrive or CD.
Please let us know how you get on.
In going back over the posts in this thread, there were threats found by Avast, and Malwarebytes. Information on what was found has not been presented and might not be available any longer. Considering the difficulties the OP is running into with installation, downloading and running of the removal tool etc. I am inclined to wonder if there is still an infection on the machine. That would also explain the slowness of the machine that has been mentioned.
Would it be possible to see the Malwarebytes log, or a fresh updated scan?
delphinium.
That certainly could be helpful if they are available but I think, with the internet problems Matt has, it may be best left for his IT friend to sort out, maybe by a restore to factory condition after saving personal files and the N 360 installation files.
True enough, Hugh. I just thought a heads-up was in order if the plan was simply to download and re-install. Plus, if the MBAM scan is still available, it would be relatively painless.
He's in South Africa so we will have to wait for the time difference!
I think they are 6 hours ahead of Eastern ....
Hi Hugh, Delphinium,
Thanks, sorry for the time delay, was sleeping or in lectures.
I removed Avast and Mcafee with the tools you prescribed, no folder in program files so not sure if there would be a log elsewhere? maybe in windows log files? The viruses found by Avast related to programs and codecs to convert music for itunes (acc) and an e-mail. I chose to delete all infections not quarantine I had to uninstall one program (as the exe was found to be infected, but not the installation?). Small files between 2-10 mb.
My malwarebytes trial ended two days ago I uninstalled it, would there be a log?
Norton V5 found 12 tracking cookies and determined that my startup items are ok.
I hope to see my friend tonight, I'll hand the machine over, but I probably won't see him again for two weeks as I have exams on Monday.
Should I mark as solution the uninstall of Norton, re-install and update so far? and how does kudos work?
Thanks for listening,
Matt
Matt,
<< My malwarebytes trial ended two days ago I uninstalled it, would there be a log? >>
That means you had the paid for version which inclues active AV elements that can interfere with security porgrams -- the Free version does not include this (although it can be switched on if you pay for the upgrade) and can be retained, as many of us do.
So that may add to the explanations of stuff interfering with Norton ......
If your friend can help you save all personal daa files, Identity Safe, and so on off your computer the qucikest thing would be to do the Restore to Factory Condition that is usually included on PCs these days instead of WIndows disks and then put back just what you need ....including installing Service Pack 1 and the Windows Updates since then. (Lots came down Tuesday and Wednesday since those were when Microsoft did it's monthly updates.
Thanks Hugh,
I'll do that, got the restore disks.
Matt

Don't forget that that puts back any trial preinstalled programs including perhaps a security application that you need to remove before reinstalling Norton.
Since you may be doing this sonner than we can to and fro with the time difference here is a link to the list to instructions and tools for some 30+ security applications.
