Pesky Registry Item Connot Be Removed With Registry Cleaner

Hello!  I have a registry item that the registry cleaner will not remove.

It is:  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{CEF63746-AD34-42D0-9138-39D83ECB77CB}\1.0\HELPDIR

Is this a virus or spyware?

Bob Haschalk

Probably not. What is in the right pane? I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and have that key. The default in the right pane is "%ProgramFiles%\Virtual PC\"

Yes, it's the same.  How do I delete this registry item?

Why would you want to? It is was put there by the operating system and not hurting anything. Keep deleting "pesky" things from the registry and you may find yourself dong a new Windows install.

Bob, why do you want to remove this key?

Guys,

If I don't miss my guess Bob is referring to the registry clean utility included with Norton Utilities. It is repeatedly finding this entry in the registry scan and wants to correct it.

It is interesting because I just recently installed Windows XP Virtual mode on Windows 7 and have the same issue and then I ran across this post! :smileywink:

Bob,

First, this is NOT being caused by malware. You have Norton Utilities, correct? What is your exact version from Help -> About? If you are not at version 14.5.0.118 please run Smart Update from the main window before proceeding. Do you have WIndows 7 with XP Virtual mode installed?

If so, please read on.

There is a subtle issue which Norton Utilities (NU) will find when you have XP Virtual mode installed on Windows 7. NU is actually not able to repair the problem and you will probably find on the final screen after doing the Repair that it shows 1 item ignored.

The way to correct this problem is to manually configure NU to ignore this entry from now on. There is nothing NU can do about it.

To have NU ignore this entry please proceed as follows.

First check to make sure that NU automatically creates a system restore point before doing a repair. From the main NU window, click Administer > Settings. Then make sure that Create a system restore point before repair is checked. Click Save and go back to the main NU window by clicking on the Optimize button on the left.

Then run the registry scan. When the results window comes up, double click any of the entries on the right window pane. This will expand the list. Find the one you included in your first post (probably at the top) and right mouse click on the entry. Then select Add value to ignore list.

Then click REPAIR. This is VERY important as this exclusion will not get saved unless you do.

After this is completed run another registry scan, it should no longer find this error.

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Allen
