I am new to this Norton Community and hope you can help. I have Norton Internet Security. I did updates on Windows and IE about 4 days ago. At one point, my Norton firewalls were off and my virus protection in Norton was off also. I hadn't done anything. I couldn't change them either-nothing I clicked on worked and I couldn't run a manual scan. That hasn't happened in 2 days, but now my phishing protection won't stay on. I can click to turn it on, but it just won't stay that way. I do notice that the Norton on the bottom right has red "x" and says phishing protection at risk, but on taskbar on upper left, it says phishing protection on.
I will also mention that about a month ago, I had malware load (it pretended to be norton type product and in trying to get rid of pop up, I clicked something wrong. I never got any type of warning from my Norton. My computer friend used malware bytes and also AVG and some other things and got rid of it. AVG, Norton and Malware haven't picked up anything since that first week. Could this have anything to do with this new issue?
If AVG is still installed on your system it could be conflicting with Norton and possibly causing some or all of your issues. The first thing to do to troubleshoot this is to completely uninstall AVG and see if solves the matter. It is never a good idea to run two full-time antivirus programs simultaneously, as they will interfere with each other.
Please run a One Click Support scan and see if that will fix the problem.
One Click Support is available from the Help&Support menu on the main screen of Norton products. This will check you internal program settings and correct them for you.
Also if you have IE8 installed, please turn the SmartScreen Filter off as this will interfere with Norton's Phishing Protection.
Please disable your system restore in case malware has taken residence there. If you have AVG on your system, it will cause various conflicts that can also be your problem. Two antivrus scanners working in real time cause problems. You will need to go to AVG website and download the removal tool to clean your system.
Once those items have been accomplished, update your Malwarebytes and run a scan while disconnected from the internet. You will be able to paste the results of the scan here for us to look at.
Which Norton internet security product is it NIS2009,or an earlier product that you have just kept renewing the subscription to? If it's just a renewal to maintain an older products subscription you may need to update. As there have been significant improvements in the newer product of NIS.
I had an earlier version of NIS (08) and upgraded to 09. That seemed to go well at this time. I am still running scan. The one difference I see--before there was a big NORTON button on bottom right task bar and that is no longer there. Now there i just a litle circle w/ a "check" on it. Did this small one replace the larger one?
For now I have left AVG on the computer. My friend who put it on after Malware and viruses got by NIS said to keep it on for a bit longer, since it's still picking up stuff here/there. Norton has just been picking up tracking cookies, but nothing else.
I am a former Mac person and do miss it, but had to go PC due to programs I needed for my teaching program. PCs just have too much stuff to worry about!
With all due respect, your friend is mistaken in advising you to keep two realtime security programs on your computer.
Having two security programs running will not give you double protection, but rather you run the risk of lesser protection as the two programs vie for system resources and conflicts will occur as both engines attempt to scan the same files.
In this scenario, neither will be able to perform properly.
Now there i just a litle circle w/ a "check" on it. Did this small one replace the larger one?
Yes, there won't be any Norton icon on the Windows Taskbar for the new Norton 2009 product, rather you can find the Norton icon on your system tray and the status of the Norton protection can be determined by the Green check mark on it.
Like Phil said, there is no need of AVG if you have the latest version of Norton 2009 as it is having advanced antispyware technology. AVG also has a realtime protection/scan which runs in the background which may conflict with Norton 2009 features. Symantec does not recommend having multiple firewalls/antivirus/Antispyware installed on the same computer at one time and it will be better if you run only one anti-virus, anti-spyware or firewall program as there is no guarantee for compatibility between different security products. You may encounter unknown problems between the programs and it may also affect system performance. Running only Norton 2009 provides the best protection and minimizes conflicts between security programs. Otherwise, you may need to disable the real time protection from one of the security programs and use the other to avoid conflicts in running programs with similar features together.
This is the first day that the phishing protection has stayed on all day since upgrading to IE. Hopefully, I won't have any more issues! Thanks for the additional tips about having both AVG and Norton. I'll get that taken care of!
Hey cindim, not sure if your problem sorted itself out, but I have exactly the same issue. I found another post that indicates that the problem is because of IE8 (beta) and that it is not a supported browser.
I will not use IE for a couple of days and see if the phising protection turns itself off again before I'm convinced it is the culprit.
Since upgrading my Norton internet security and also upgrading to IE8, I haven't had any issues w/ my phishing protection and Norton was also catching things it hadn't before!
