Windows 7 Prof 32 bit on a Dell PC
N360 v 5.2.0.13
My husband got a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, telling him his computer is at risk of imminment death because his N360 (downloaded from the Norton website) is no good.
This fellow had hubby go into Event Viewer, and there are lots of Errors and Warnings...much more than normal.
Now this fellow asked to remotely take over the computer. Allowed him that because he said he was from Microsoft. He clicked on hubby's N360 icon and said "Norton has control over all of the functions" . I asked him what he meant and he told me (we were on speaker phone) that Norton people will run the scans, do backup, upgrade, etc without asking hubby permission. My hubby has disabled Norton Backup and has disabled Norton's Outgoing Email Scan. This person said that by "altering" settings, my hubby screwed up Norton so bad that the firewall was no longer working, viruses were infecting his computer and it would soon die.
This person, while he had control, went into a 'tree'? via DOS by the looks of it, where it showed that the firewall was at risk. He also said that downloading N360 from the Norton Website was NO GOOD... it is only a 'trial' software....even if we have a 1 year subscription!! That cued me that something was very strange with this conversation.
Now, neither hubby nor me are very computer literate, BUT red flags were raised. This person then tried to SELL us a Repair Technician package from Global Connect Cloud.com He said that a personal techician would remotely take over the computer and fix it for hubby. Googled that website and came up with this URL 67.18.7.100
I haven't checked hubby's N360...he's running a Full System Scan at the moment (since we don't know if something was deposited into his computer that's not good for his computer). But any feedback from you folks would be appreciated. I'm also going to check with the Microsoft website to see if this was on the up and up.
Thanks in advance for your insight into this matter
