PIF:AlertEng.dll error message

Vineeth,

Thank you. I didn't see the private message. Where did you send it?

I sent a private message to you. Please look for the in the upper right hand corner of any community page to access the message.

I have been living with this error since Symantec can’t seem to correct it. I have NIS 2009, NSW 2008, and Ghost 14. The error message at boot means nothing and can be ignored. It hardly seems worth the time to remove all the products and reinstall them.  I’d sure hate to go to all that work and have the error still be there!  Just my two cents worth

I just noticed something interesting.  I don’t have a registry entry for PIF:AlertEng.dll.  But I get the error on just one of my machines running NSW 2008.  That machine has “LiveUpdate Notice” installed on it … the others do not!  So I think “LiveUpdate Notice” is the problem … not the registry setting for PIF:AlertEng.dll. And I cannot remove the program in Add/Remove Programs!!

Hi Vineeth,

Do I run the removal tool first or do I first delete from the control panel and then run the removal tool.

What is the sequence or do I just use the removal tool and all is gone?

Also, as you may be gathering this is a lot of work to remove about 4 apps to get rid of this message. The tech I worked with the other night said that there would be a patch by next Saturday. He guaranteed it. Do you know if this is true or was he just trying to get rid of me?

Thanks again

M

I am new too.  I recently upgraded Norton Internet Security 2008 with NIS 2009 that I installed from the CD I ordered.  Installation was successful and I activated the product.  When I restarted my computer I, too, begin getting the PIF:AlertEng.dll error message.  I downloaded the suggested fix, which, of course, didn’t do anything.  I found this discussion thread and (thankfully) learned I was not alone.  I presently have no desire to go through the Norton Removal Tool routine unless absolutely necessary.  Since the error message occurs at boot-up, I went to System Configuration Utility (XP MCE 2005) and looked at the start-up tab.  Found a “Symantec User Session” item (…ccapp.exe) and disabled it.  (ccapp.exe is in “program files\common files\symantec” folder.) No more PIF:AlertEng.dll error message at boot-up;  all status indicators for NIS 2009 says it is working perfectly.  (I run Norton Ghost 10.0 and it seems to work as usual.)  I am not sure I did the right thing by disabling ccaps.exe but am guessing it pertained to my earlier versions of Norton Internet Securtiy 2006, 2007, and 2008.  Any thoughts about I have done?

Hi Vineeth, I have exactly the same problem (AlertEng.dll error). This is becoming extremely annoying, particulalry as I just spent good monye on NAV 2009! Thanks for any tips on how this might be solved.

Hi jako,

I'm sorry to learn about the error. I believe that this indicates a problem with LiveUpdate Notice, which is our mechanism for alerting you to the availability of upgrades for your product. I think the best place to start is to download and reinstall LiveUpdate Notice.

Let us know how that goes.
