i did not unistall nav 2008 first, but let the nav 2009 do the uninstall

Try uninstalling 2009 and afterwords be sure no 2008 is left and reboot. Try reinstalling 2009.

thanks for the suggestion… i’ll give it a try.  what about using control panel uninstall to just remove the old live update ?

Yes try that also.

i tried removing extra live update and it didn't help eliminate the error message on startup... since both nav 2009 and ghost 10 seem to be working fine, i think i'll run this way for a week or so before trying to uninstall then reinstall nav 2009.

        thanks again

I am getting this same message and have uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times. I have used the Norton Removal tool and nothing seems to work. I think this is probably a bug in the software when running under Vista. It sure would be nice to have these things tested completely before releasing them. Anybody found a fix yet?

I would contact Norton support:

norton.com/support

You can chat for free with a support rep. It sounds like corrupted installation files. They will assist you in removing all Norton related files and folders and registary keys/entries/hives.

I am having the same problem…but I’m running Window’s XP - their fix is useless…I should have known better then to download the new version - always a problem…should just learn to leave well enough alone. :smileymad:

I have resolved the issue, but it takes a couple of extra steps. Norton's upgrade utility evidently, doesn't do a complete job of totally removing the previous product and leaves some baggage behind that causes problems. Here's how I solved the problem and have now done this on two other computers with success.

1. First go to Control panel and open the add/remove programs window.

2. Locate any Norton installed products and remove them. Some will uninstall, some may not, but get the ones that will uninstalled.

3. Re-boot your computer

4. Go to the Norton website and get the Norton Removal Tool app.

5. Run this and it should finish cleaning the old stuff out.

6. Reboot the computer one more time.

7. Install the new product and it should install clean with no error.

I also had this problem and the suggested fix didn't fix it.

I'm running XP home and also use Norton Save & Restore and some older version of Norton Protection Centre appears to be in use.

After running the Liveupdate from NIS 2009 several times before it didn't find any further updates (rebooting after each go) and also running the Liveupdate (again several times) from with the Norton Save & Restore/ Norton Protection Centre application the problem eventually disappeared.

Might be worth a try before going for the uninstall/reinstall option.

I do have a small issue in that this older version of Norton Protection Centre doesn't appear to recognize NIS 2009 and is flagging up and warning that I don't have a virus checker or firewall installed, but I do.

This was sort of fixed.  I am guessing that the NPC is part of the Norton Systemworks package, if so, and if you meet the following requirements [you have NSW 2006, NSW 2007, or NSW 2008 and it is NOT the Basic Edition, and your subscription is current], then you can download a free upgrade from here:  Free Upgrade.  If you have NSW Basic Edition, you should run Live Update from within Systemworks and it will run a fix for the recognition problem.

Good luck.

I  have upgraded  from norton antivirus 2008 to nav 2009 and now on start , the error message "could not install  PIF::AlertEng.dll " and  tells me to click a link which should solve the problem.  running this corrective download did not eliminate this error message.  I also have norton ghost 10 installed on my computer (os: windows xp home)... i understand there is a conflict with some of the symantec live update modules.

any suggestions to correct this error message without affecting ghost.

                thanks

Did you do a complete uninstall of 2008 first?
