Hi Madeline,

Question #2:

You can turn on the Windows Firewall during installation OR

You can unplug from the internet while the initial installation is progressing.

Near the end of the installation you will be asked to activate your product.  At that point it is safe for you to plug back in.

Question #3:

You should not have any problems activating or getting updates via Firefox.

Let us know how you do.

I hope you can give me some advice. At present I have NIS 2003 on my PC, my subscription is current and it’s up to date as far as it goes. I’ve now bought NIS 2009 on a disk as I’m on dial-up and it would take too long to download it. What I’d like to know is:
1. When I uninstall NIS 2003, should I do it via Add or Remove Programs or use the Norton Removal Tool or even both? In A/R Programs I have:
LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.80 (Symantec Corporation)
Norton Internet Security
Norton WMI Update
(I think that’s all apart from Norton Spyware Scan provided by Yahoo! which is part of the BT Yahoo! Toolbar and probably doesn’t affect the issue.)
I also have the Windows Installer Clean Up which has all my Norton/Symantec stuff on it, but I don’t know whether that would be of any use.
2. Firewall. When I install NIS 2009 it says in the instructions that I have to be online. This bothers me as my old Norton Firewall will be gone, so should I turn the XP Firewall on until the Norton one is working?
3. My default browser is Firefox 3.0.3; is this likely to cause any problems?

I’m running XP Home SP3, please let me know if you need any more info. I’ve done this separately from other posts here as I’m currently using such an old version of NIS and thought the procedure might be different. You’ll probably think I’m mad to be still using NIS 2003, but it’s never let me down in the 5+ years I’ve had it - no viruses at all!
I really hope that you’ll be able to help me to get NIS 2009 up and running without any difficulty.
Thanks and sorry if this has got a bit long-winded!

"2003"!  Wow; I thought 2005 was bad!

No problem having your Windows' Firewall on until you install N.I.S. 2009; you will notice a huge difference.

Just by-the-way, what Features does N.I.S. 2003 have?  And how many Days you got left on you Subscription?

Upgrading instructions for Norton 2005 Products and Earlier:

04. Go to Add/Remove.

05. Locate "Norton Internet Security (Symantec Corporation)" and click on "Remove".

06. Follow the instrctions and, when asked to, re-start your computer.

07. Locate to Add/Remove upon start-up.

08. Click on LiveUpdate and "Remove" and any other LiveUpdate.

09. If requested, re-start your computer.

10. Double-click on the Saved N.I.S./N.AV. File on your Desktop.

11. Follow the instructions.

12. Open Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus and "Run [Norton] LiveUpdate" manually.

13. It is now Safe to Connect to the Internet again.

14. If you notice things not running right with N.I.S. 2009/N.AV. 2009, it may be a bug; please Post them here [in the Forum].

15. If you have Other Norton Products, then you can re-install LiveUpdate, or, if you have Used the N.R.T., you can re-install your Other Norton Product(s); if you do not have the Disc, then you can re-download it via the Trailware. Norton SystemWorks users have had a "Patch" Released so that Updates are received through Norton LiveUpdate, i.e. your Norton Internet Security 2009 Product.

16. If you have problems un-installing/installing, then use the Norton Removal Tool.

03. Save your Product Key (www.mynortonaccount.com).

Instructions have been Edited; please follow the instructions as they come and not by Numbers.

Floating_Red,

Madeline mentioned in her first post that she purchased NIS 2009 on CD, so portions of your instructions are not required and may be confusing.

Thank you all for your replies. I’m still a little unsure as to whether I should unistall NIS 2003 via Add/Remove or just use the Norton Removal Tool. Possibly the latter since the program is 5 years old.
I’ll let you know how I get on, but it won’t be for a few weeks as my present sub doesn’t run out until the end of November.
It sounds as if Firefox won’t cause any problems to Norton so I hope that the opposite is true and that Norton won’t cause any problems to Firefox either!
I’m very grateful to all of you for replying to my query. If you think of anything else I should be aware of, please post it here.

I think it would be best if NIS 2003 would be uninstalled via the Norton Removal Tool. I’ve heard when uninstalled from Add/Remove programs, NIS leaves a few files behind after the uninstallation.

Just remember that the NRT removes all Norton applications that it finds, not just the one you want to remove !!! So if you have GHOST or Save & Restore those would go too.

Just try add/remove that would be fine. Than install v2009. You should be fine. Please let us know

Thanks. You've all given me plenty to think about. I'll probably uninstall via Add/Remove and use the NRT only if that fails. I'll let you know how I get on.

Also, the NRT  is shown as being for use with a failed installation or a damaged Norton product so I'll use it as a last resort if necessary.

To me the NRT works best no matter what. Failed uninstalls or not. If I want something uninstalled I would rather have it completely gone then leaving left over files and folders. Its easier and faster and assures a complete uninstall.

Although many people disagree here on this, you would be doing what Norton themselves recommend particularly since NRT removes everything it finds, not just what you want to remove and you might have GHOST or Save & Restore, for example, that you were perfectly happy to keep.

I even am in favor of updating "on top" of the existing installation if I have settings or white and black lists I want to carry over. If it goes wrong I can still use Remove Programs or NRT but so far it has worked fine for me.

I've finally decided to go with the NRT as I have no other Norton/Symantec Products to worry about. Thank you all for your help and advice.

Am I allowed to tick the Kudos for more than one person since you've helped me?

I'll let you know how I get on, but it won't be for a couple of weeks yet as I'm going to get a bit more from my current subscription!

If I can't find this thread, I'll start a new one.

Yes, you are allowed.

Thanks!

If you have no other Norton products then its best to use the Norton Removal tool especially since you have such an older version.
