HI BIGPoppa2333,

Welcome to the Norton Community. Can you give us more detail about your system please? What OS and SP do you have and is it 32 or 64 bit? What type of network are you connecting to? Is this a home network, library network, school or what?

Most home network environments do not need proxy settings at all. I assume you are asking about the proxy settings in NAV 2011 itself is this correct? If you are connecting via a home network, try unchecking all the settings as depicted in my image below. This image is from NIS but I believe it looks the same in NAV.

When did you install NAV? What other security (anti-virus, etc) did you have before this and how did you remove it before installing NAV? Did you use a removal tool supplied by the vendor of the previous security software? Any time you change security products it is highly recommended to use a special removal tool to remove the old software before attempting to install the new software. This is because software of this type integrates into your OS very tightly and there is a good chance that a typical uninstall could leave things behind which could cause problems with your new software.

Also you mention having a virus. Can you give us more detail on what virus you believe you have and what it is called? Why do you think you have a virus? If you are having unusual problems with your computer such as unexpected popups, etc please be sure to give us details on what you are seeing and having problems with.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi AllenM, i have a Dell Inspiron 1545, sorry but i dont know what OS or SP is so i cant answer that, and i am using my home wirless connection. Now i installed Norton Antivirus 2011 i opened up my internet and went into the LAN settings folder and copied my proxy address and port into the spots they were asking me to put it in. after that the installation continued and finished without a problem, but Norton is now trying to activate it but it keeps having a problem saying that it cant connect to the internet. My internet window also will not open in regular mode, i am currently in safe mode that is the only way my internet works, that is why i believe i have a virus. While i am in regular mode, it says my internet is connected but when i open internet explorer nothing happens, it doesnt load or anything its just a white screen and the internet window freezes. i bought Norton antivirus today hopin it could help, i used to have McAffe but the free subscription ran out probably like 8 or 9 months ago and i havent had anything since then. Hopefully you can help me because i really think my computer is completly screwed up and i dont know what to do.

HI BIGPoppa2333,

Thanks for the update. A few things.

1. You can find your OS (such as Windows Vista, etc) by right clicking on My Computer from your desktop icon or via Windows Explorer and select Properties. Your OS will be identified there along with SP (Service Pack) and whether it is 32 or 64 bit.

2. If you previously had McAfee, did you remove it before installing NAV (Norton Antivirus)? You need to uninstall McAfee through Control Panel (add/remove programs) and also run the McAfee removal tool which can be found here. If you have not already please uninstall McAfee through Control panel and in either case please download and run the McAfee removal tool I mentioned. We need to get this cleaned off of your system as it could have prevented proper install of NAV.

3. Regarding the proxy settings. Where exactly are you configuring proxy settings? Are you configuring this in your browser such as IE (Internet Explorer) or in NAV itself? Again it is very unusual for home networks to require proxy settings so I would recommend that you try configuring NAV without any proxy settings at all as depicted in my image below. (Sorry it looks like I forgot to attach the image in my last post). If you are configuring proxy settings in IE (via Tools > Internet Options) then please also try to remove any proxy settings and see if this has an effect on your internet connectivity.

4. I am not seeing anything yet which directly lets me know you have any sort of malware infection. I think your connectivity problems stems from improper proxy settings but as a precaution, please follow the procedure below to download and run a scan with the free version of MalwareBytes.

Please download, install, update and run the free version of MalwareBytes following the procedure outlined below. Any other recommendations will follow after you have a chance to provide any other details requested.

Please go to www.malwarebytes.org

1. Download Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (mbam-setup.exe) free version and save it on your Desktop.
2. After downloading, double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
3. Follow the prompts and install as “default” only
4. Before the installation completes, check on the following prompts:
- Update Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware
5. Click “Finish.” The program will run automatically and you will be prompt to update the program before doing a scan. Please update.
6. Scan your computer thoroughly choosing a "full scan".
7. When scanning is finished click on “Show Results”
8. Make sure that all detected threats are marked with a check mark, click on "Remove Selected".
9. Restart your computer.

Please post the logs back to this thread using "add attachments" at the bottom.

Note: Sometimes the main site is blocked from attempts to download MalwareBytes. If this occurs please try to download from:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Please do not download the Spyware Doctor which you will see on this page!

Please let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Ok so i installed Malwarebytes and ran a scan but nothing was detected. Also, i should have said this in the previous post i made, but i did completely removed McAffe from my computer. Right now i completely have Norton installed i just cannot activate it because i cannot get internet connection while in regular mode, right now im in safe mode, that is the only way i can get internet. While im in regular mode it says that my internet is connected but i cant get on the internet and my Norton cannot activate. Also as for the proxy settings thing, i got my proxy settings from my internet explorer. I went to Tools, Internet Options, then went to the Connections tab, went to LAN Settings, and clicked on Advanced. There i got proxy numbers and a port number which i copied and pasted into a very similar place as in the picture that you put up.

Did you previously set up a proxy setting? What happen if you try WITHOUT a proxy setting? Most home network DO NOT need one! I'm connected to the net WITHOUT a proxy.

Hello Tywin7

Allen already mentioned what you mentioned in his post earlier in the thread.

Hi BIGPoppa2333,

You indicated that you completely removed McAfee before but the question is how did you remove it? Did you remove it through Control panel only?

As I mentioned before it is not enough to uninstall previous security software like McAfee via Control panel only, you also need to use a special removal tool to ensure that all remnants of the old security software is removed from your system. This should be done before installing new security software.

So if you have not explictly run the McAfee Removal Tool before then please do so now. The tool once again can be found at the following location:

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Beyond that, as I mentioned earlier (Floplop, thanks for pointing out to Tywin that I had already said this) you should try removing all proxy settings from both IE and NAV.

Please do let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

HI BIGPoppa2333,

We may need to uninstall and reinstall NAV and use the Norton removal tool as it is possible that remnants of McAfee may have kept it from instlaling cleanly.

However before we start that I need to know what you have done with the proxy settings? You have indicated that you are not able to connect to the Internet via IE or when trying to activate your Norton product.

Have you tried removing ALL proxy settings from both IE and NAV??

Thanks very much and best wishes.

Allen

I can now access internet explorer in regular mode again not just in safe mode, its just the activation thing im having problems with, i will try to uninstall it and reinstall it to see if that helps.  is there a tool i should use to uninstall this?

i did not change any of the proxy settings in internet explorer and i dont think i can change them in Norton because when i installed it it said that i wouldnt be able to change anything.

Hi BIGPoppa2333,

What did you do to restore your internet connectivity via IE? Have you checked your proxy settings in NAV, Misc settings?

You mentioned that you cannot change proxy settings in NAV. Are you logged on as an Administrator? By default settings will only be available to computer Admnistrator user accounts.

Since you originally installed NAV without having run the McAfee removal tool, yes let's go ahead and uninstall and reinstall NAV. Please follow the procedure below.

Before you use the removal tool, please download the full version of NAV 2011 from here. Please note that this is the English version so please let me know if you need a different language and I will provide the appropriate link.

Once you have downloaded NIS, you can proceed with use of the removal tool as indicated below.

Please NOTE that this removes ALL Symantec products so be sure to have your license keys ready as you will need to reinstall all your Symantec software products. You can get your Norton product key from your Norton Account.

Once done please download the Norton Removal Tool from Symantec from this link.

For your protection, disconnect from the Internet before continuing.

Do a conventional uninstall of NAV via the Control Panel and then restart your computer.

Run the Norton Removal Tool and once it is completed, please reboot your computer. Once up please run the Removal Tool one more time and once again reboot.

Then please install NAV 2011 from the full version downloaded earlier. Once installed please reconnect back to the Internet and run Live Update repeatedly (rebooting as requested) until it reports there are no more updates.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Ok well I FINALLY got this to work i uninstalled it and reinstalled it and now it works! Thanks so much for your help AllenM!

Hello BIGPoppa2333

Please remember to use a good fire wall along with NAV 2011 as NAV 2011 has no fire wall. Thanks.

Hi BIGPoppa2333,

Thanks for the update and letting us know everything is working now.

You never did say what OS you have. Again you can get this from right clicking My Computer from your desktop or Windows Explorer and select Properties. If you have Windows 7, it has a fairly "decent" firewall but if you have anything older than that I would highly recommend a 3rd party firewall. Even with Windows 7 you can get much better firewalls out there but at least Windows 7 is decent.

If you consider your problem solved please mark this thread by clicking the Accept as solution button on the post which you believe contained the solution. This will allow others to know the problem is solved and quickly get to the solution when they search the forums.

Best wishes.
