Please help! Symantec says trojan is gone, but ...

My computer became  infected with the fakeavalert trojan. While relatively harmless, this is a really annoying trojan causing constant pop-ups that look like Windows updates/warning. I ran a Symantec full-system scan and the virus was found and (supposedly) deleted. However, after rebooting my computer this morning, the pop ups are still coming. I reran the symantec scan and an additional scan downloaded from the internet. Neither scan found the trojan again this morning. I have also checked the registry and none of the lines inserted by the trojan (gotten from a "how to remove" site) are present:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\"WinAVX" = "%System%\WinAvXX.exe"
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\"WinAVX" = "%System%\WinAvXX.exe"
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\"Shell" = "Explorer.exe %System%\printer.exe"
  • So, while it appears my computer is virus-free, I'm still seeing the effects. Anyone know how I can get rid of these pop-ups?

I'm using MS Vista, on a Toishiba Satellite E105-S1402 laptop.

    Thanks for the help,

    Katy
